Direct Observation of Local Dielectric Conductive Paths and Their Dynamics in the Degraded Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors

Wentong Du et al.

Summary: Scanning thermal microscopy is used to directly image the conductive paths and dynamic behaviors in degraded multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) due to thermal conductivity differences. The thermal image clearly displays the electrical tree growth behaviors of the local conductive paths under dc bias on and off states, revealing the dominance of space-charge-limited current mechanism in MLCCs. The results demonstrate scanning thermal microscopy as a powerful tool for imaging local conductive behavior, providing a direct and unique view to understand local breakdown mechanisms and enrich insights into insulation resistance degradation and MLCC reliability.

Simultaneous direct measurement of the electrocaloric and dielectric dynamics of ferroelectrics with microsecond temporal resolution

J. Fischer et al.

Summary: A contactless technique is introduced for direct time-resolved measurements of the full dynamics of the adiabatic temperature change in electrocaloric materials. The technique detects the infrared radiation emitted by the electrocaloric sample with μs time resolution and mK temperature resolution. Time-resolved measurements of the electrocaloric effect are presented at kHz frequencies and small field strengths. The technique allows for the simultaneous recording of transient behaviors in the applied electric field and induced polarization, providing a comprehensive understanding of the correlation between electrocaloric and ferroelectric properties. Additionally, it can be used for continuous fatigue measurements for >10(6) electric field cycles.

Direct Electrocaloric Characterization of Ceramic Films

Uros Prah et al.

Summary: Reliable and accurate characterization of the electrocaloric effect is necessary to understand material properties. A new approach using infrared imaging is proposed to capture the adiabatic electrocaloric effect in ceramic films. The results obtained with this method are validated and compared with other direct and indirect approaches.

Mapping the magnetocaloric effect at the microscale on a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy with infrared thermography

Maria J. Pereira et al.

Summary: An innovative study of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) was conducted using infrared thermography on a Co-doped Ni-Mn-Ga bulk sample with microscopic resolution. MCE maps were created for different sample temperatures, revealing spatially heterogeneous behavior during heating and cooling processes. Significant differences were observed between heating and cooling, with greater amplitude and inhomogeneity on heating. The study also identified varying temperatures and magnitudes of the structural transformation occurring in different micro-regions.

Quantitative Mapping of Unmodulated Temperature Fields with Nanometer Resolution

Amin Reihani et al.

Summary: The quantitative mapping of temperature fields with nanometric resolution is crucial in various scientific research areas and emerging technologies. Recent advances in scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) have enabled simultaneous quantification of tip-sample thermal resistance and topography, allowing for quantitative thermometry even in situations where the temperature field is modulated. The introduction of a modulated heat input to the scanning thermal probe (STP) allows for the mapping of unmodulated temperature fields with high spatial and temperature resolution, facilitating temperature mapping of microdevices under practical operating conditions.

Correlations between local electrocaloric effect and domains in ferroelectric crystals

Chi Hou Lei et al.

Summary: This study establishes the correlations between local electrocaloric responses and domains in ferroelectric crystals and investigates the local electrocaloric responses in different domain structures. The results reveal the characteristics of local electrocaloric responses in different domain walls and show good agreement between simulations and experimental measurements. Furthermore, increasing domain wall density can multiplicatively enhance the macroscopic average electrocaloric response in ferroelectrics.

Direct Visualization of Anti-Ferroelectric Switching Dynamics via Electrocaloric Imaging

Pablo Vales-Castro et al.

Summary: The large electrocaloric coupling in PbZrO3 allows for high-speed infrared imaging to visualize anti-ferroelectric switching dynamics. By introducing thickness gradients, the dynamics can be changed, and introducing thermostatic temperature differences can yield a Janus-like electrocaloric response.
