Thermal batteries based on inverse barocaloric effects

Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: We propose and demonstrate a novel concept of thermal batteries, called barocaloric thermal batteries, which are based on the large inverse barocaloric effect of ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN). The thermal charging is initiated by pressurization and the discharging releases 43 J g-1 of energy, which is 11 times more than the input mechanical energy. The pressure-restrained heat-carrying phase ensures stable long-duration storage. These barocaloric thermal batteries, reinforced by their solid microscopic mechanism, are expected to significantly advance the utilization of waste heat.

Ultrasensitive barocaloric material for room-temperature solid-state refrigeration

Qingyong Ren et al.

Summary: A giant barocaloric effect has been observed in inorganic NH4I near room temperature, which could help overcome the driving field challenge in solid-state refrigeration. The material exhibits high reversible entropy changes and a structural phase transition. Analysis of the crystal structures and atomic dynamics reveals that a strong reorientation-vibration coupling is responsible for the pressure sensitivity. This research has the potential to advance the practical application of barocaloric refrigeration.

Colossal barocaloric effects in adamantane derivatives for thermal management

Alejandro Salvatori et al.

Summary: Plastic crystals have the potential to be used in environmentally friendly cooling and waste heat management. This study investigates the pressure-induced caloric response of three plastic crystals and finds that two of them exhibit significant barocaloric effects under small pressure changes. The transition temperatures above ambient make these compounds suitable for waste heat management and industrial cooling and heat pumping.

Colossal Reversible Barocaloric Effects in Layered Hybrid Perovskite (C10H21NH3)2MnCl4 under Low Pressure Near Room Temperature

Junning Li et al.

Summary: Barocaloric effects in a layered hybrid organic-inorganic compound (C10H21NH3)(2)MnCl4, which are reversible and colossal under pressure changes below 0.1 GPa, are reported. These effects are attributed to a phase transition characterized by features such as strong disordering of organic chains, a large volume change, high sensitivity of transition temperature to pressure, and small hysteresis. The obtained values are unprecedented for solid-state cooling materials at low pressure changes, indicating that colossal effects can be achieved in compounds other than plastic crystals.
