Comparative assessment of acute toxicity and histological changes in liver of African catfish Clarias gariepinus exposed to cotton insecticides

Prudencio Agbohessi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute toxicity of insecticides used in Benin cotton fields on Clarias gariepinus, focusing on the histopathological effects on the liver. The results showed that three insecticides, namely Vizir, Pyrinex, and Pyro, were highly toxic to the juveniles of C. gariepinus, with low LC(50) values. The experiments also observed morphological and behavioral responses in the exposed fish, indicating neurotoxicity. Histopathological alterations in the liver of contaminated fish included necrosis, vacuolation, bleeding, nuclear degeneration, hepatocytes degeneration, and sinusoids dilatation, with Vizir causing the highest histological alteration indices.

Exposure to acute waterborne cadmium caused severe damage on lipid metabolism of freshwater fish, revealed by nuclear lipid droplet deposition in hepatocytes of rare minnow

Xiao-Hong Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of cadmium on lipid metabolism in freshwater fish using rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) as the model species. The results showed that exposure to high concentrations of cadmium led to severe damage in the form of lipid droplet accumulation, abnormal rough endoplasmic reticulum lamellae, and hepatocyte necrosis. Furthermore, hepatic and serum lipids were significantly increased, while the mRNA transcripts of certain genes related to lipid oxidation, synthesis, and transport were altered. These findings suggest that disrupted lipid transport may play a key role in the accumulation of hepatic lipid droplets.

Oxidative response to Cd and Pb accumulation in coastal fishes of Pattani Bay

Phanwimol Tanhan et al.

Summary: Bioaccumulation of heavy metals can lead to physiological and biochemical changes in aquatic animals. This study evaluated the accumulation of Cd and Pb as well as the oxidative response in the liver and muscle of four fish species. The liver showed significantly higher accumulation of Cd, Pb, and oxidative response compared to the muscle in all coastal fish species. The levels of antioxidative parameters varied among the species. S. argus exhibited the highest levels of Cd and Pb accumulation and showed simultaneous activation and depression of oxidative defense mechanisms in the liver.

Sex-specific effects of fluoride and lead exposures on histology, antioxidant physiology, and immune system in the liver of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Guodong Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that both fluoride and lead have varying degrees of effects on the growth, tissue structure, oxidative stress, and immune system functions of zebrafish. Simultaneous exposure to fluoride and lead leads to more serious damage, and male zebrafish are more sensitive to these substances than female zebrafish.

Seasonal Differences in Water Pollution and Liver Histopathology of Iberian Barbel (Luciobarbus bocagei) and Douro Nase (Pseudochondrostoma duriense) in an Agricultural Watershed

Regina Maria Bessa Santos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the histological changes in the liver of Iberian barbel and Douro nase due to seasonal variations in water quality. The severity of liver histopathological alterations varied between moderate and severe, with higher prevalence in the summer season and at downstream and middle stream sampling points. Exposure to metals was found to increase the risk of liver damage. The severity of liver histopathological changes differed according to the type of contaminants and sampling periods, and can serve as a valuable indicator of water quality.

Morphological and Functional Alterations Induced by Two Ecologically Relevant Concentrations of Lead on Danio rerio Gills

Vittoria Curcio et al.

Summary: Lead, a highly toxic pollutant with a tendency to bioaccumulate, is a major concern for both humans and wildlife. This study investigates the effects of low and environmentally relevant concentrations of lead on the gills of Danio rerio, a model species for human toxicity. The results show that even low doses of lead can disrupt osmoregulation, induce cell damage, and trigger pathological changes in the gills.

Determination of the Heavy Metal Bioaccumulation Patterns in Muscles of Two Species of Mullets from the Southern Caspian Sea

Shima Bakhshalizadeh et al.

Summary: Fish are a significant source of protein and nutrients, but they may also contain harmful substances like heavy metals. This study aimed to evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals in different muscles of two commercial fish species from the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. The results showed that concentrations of mercury, lead, and cadmium exceeded EU regulations for fish, indicating heavy metal pollution in the sampled region. Continued monitoring and evaluation of pollution levels in the Caspian Sea will be necessary.
