What drives mixed-species shoaling among wild zebrafish? The roles of predators, food access, abundance of conspecifics and familiarity

Ishani Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Mixed-species groups occur in various animal communities and provide benefits to their members. By conducting laboratory experiments, this study found that zebrafish in mixed shoals consume a comparable amount of food as in conspecific shoals, associate more with mixed shoals under predator risk, and prefer familiar conspecifics over unfamiliar mixed and unfamiliar conspecific shoals. These findings suggest that equitable food consumption, predator avoidance, and familiarity play important roles in driving zebrafish towards mixed-species shoaling.

A review and meta-analysis of the environmental biology of bleak Alburnus alburnus in its native and introduced ranges, with reflections on its invasiveness

Dani Latorre et al.

Summary: The bleak Alburnus alburnus is a medium-sized leuciscid fish that is naturally distributed across central European and western Asian fresh waters. It has been widely introduced in Europe and northern Africa as a forage species for game fishes. In its native range, it feeds mainly on zooplankton, but non-native populations show high phenotypic plasticity in their biological attributes, adapting to local environmental conditions and invading different ecosystems. This plasticity, coupled with broad physiological tolerance, is likely to facilitate its adaptation and invasion of new habitats in the future.

Activity, boldness and schooling in freshwater fish are affected by river salinization

Tamara Leite et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing salinity has sub-lethal effects on freshwater fish behavior, including reduced swimming activity and shoal cohesion, as well as an increase in bolder individuals. Changes in fish behavior can reflect shifts in ecological condition.

Evaluation of the trophic status in a Mediterranean reservoir under climate change: An integrated modelling approach

Carina Almeida et al.

Summary: This study utilized integrated modelling approach to assess the trophic status of Montargil reservoir in southern Portugal under climate change scenarios, showing significant decreases in dissolved oxygen concentration in the hypolimnion, increases in chlorophyll-a concentration in the epilimnion, and overall eutrophic conditions in the reservoir for the majority of the decadal timelines assessed. Despite potential water use reduction measures, the eutrophic state is not expected to improve.

Major threats to European freshwater fish species

Maria Joao Costa et al.

Summary: Freshwater fish in Europe are the richest group of vertebrates but also the second most threatened, primarily by factors such as dams, droughts, invasive species, agriculture and forestry effluents, and overfishing. The study highlights the high level of imperilment of European freshwater fish, especially in the Iberian Peninsula, where low richness combined with over 50% of threatened species in several catchments. Increasing longitudinal connectivity and other efforts are crucial for species resilience and conservation.

Environmental Risk of Pesticides for Fish in Small- and Medium-Sized Streams of Switzerland

Inge Werner et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the acute and chronic risk of pesticides, alone and in mixtures, for fish in Swiss streams between 2012 and 2018. It found that certain pesticides posed risks to fish health, especially pyrethroid insecticides, fungicides, and pesticide mixtures, at environmental concentrations.
