Classification of instant coffees based on caffeine content and roasting degree using NIR spectrometry and multivariate analysis

Rossana O. Nobrega et al.

Summary: In this study, near-infrared spectroscopy and multivariate classification tools were used to develop methods for authenticating and checking the compliance of decaffeinated instant coffees, as well as discriminating between regular instant coffees according to the roasting degree. The combination of these techniques proved to be valuable and fast for checking the quality of instant coffees.

Comparison of chemometric strategies for potential exposure marker discovery and false-positive reduction in untargeted metabolomics: application to the serum analysis by LC-HRMS after intake of Vaccinium fruit supplements

Lapo Renai et al.

Summary: This study presents different chemometric selection workflows for the discovery of potential exposure markers (PEMs) in untargeted LC-HRMS metabolomics, aiming to identify statistically significant PEMs using multivariate or univariate parametric or non-parametric data analysis methods. The study successfully identified a restricted group of significant features and annotated several metabolites associated with nutrition intake. Additionally, the analysis of longitudinal data revealed significant PEMs that can discriminate between different interventions.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Applied to the Detection of Multiple Adulterants in Roasted and Ground Arabica Coffee

Cinthia de Carvalho Couto et al.

Summary: In this study, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometrics were successfully used to detect common adulterants in roasted ground arabica coffee. The technique could discriminate pure samples from adulterated ones, including single and multiple adulterations. Additionally, NIR spectroscopy showed potential for geographical discrimination of arabica coffees.

Toxic elements and trace elements in Macrolepiota procera mushrooms from southern Spain and northern Morocco

Marta Barea-Sepulveda et al.

Summary: Wild edible mushroom Macrolepiota procera is an efficient accumulator for trace elements and toxic elements, with higher content in the cap than in the stipe, especially for copper and zinc. There is no significant difference in metal and metalloid content between different geographical areas. Concerns about health risks are raised due to frequent consumption of this mushroom, particularly in relation to chromium, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury.

A microwave-based extraction method for the determination of sugar and polyols: Application to the characterization of regular and peaberry coffees

Widiastuti Setyaningsih et al.

Summary: The brewing properties of coffee products are influenced by the chemical composition in the coffee bean. A new extraction method called microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was developed to extract sugars and polyols from the bean. The method was optimized using response surface methodology and showed high precision and accuracy. It successfully described the composition of sugars and polyols in different types of coffee beans.

Value proposition operationalization in peer-to-peer platforms using machine learning

Jose M. Ramos-Henriquez et al.

Summary: This paper aims to operationalize the value proposition in peer-to-peer platforms by analyzing which variables contribute the most towards being an Airbnb Superhost. Using methods like Boruta for feature selection and SVM classification, over 250 variables were analyzed in the Canary Islands region. Results suggest that the value proposition in peer-to-peer platforms can be broken down into shared resources, value package, and communications. The application of Machine Learning in the field of Tourism and Marketing shows great potential to help hosts understand untapped potential and highlight relevant variables in search results.

A Methodology Based on FT-IR Data Combined with Random Forest Model to Generate Spectralprints for the Characterization of High-Quality Vinegars

Jose Luis P. Calle et al.

Summary: In this study, 48 Sherry vinegar samples were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy, with HCA and PCA techniques used to classify samples based on their raw materials, while SVM and RF techniques successfully classified samples according to the type of wine used for their production. The RF method was able to select important variables to develop a characteristic spectralprint of the vinegar samples based on their starting wine, achieving 100% accuracy in both LOOCV and OOB sets.

Digested Civet Coffee Beans (Kopi Luwak)-An Unfortunate Trend in Specialty Coffee Caused by Mislabeling of Coffea liberica?

Dirk W. Lachenmeier et al.

Summary: The production of digested coffees like Kopi Luwak from captive civet cats should not be encouraged in the context of animal protection. Previous studies on such coffees may have been affected by sample selection and misclassification. Wild civets may prefer Coffea liberica beans, leading to chemical differences in the coffee produced by careful selection of ripe cherries, rather than digestion-related changes.
