Sustainable Use of CO2 and Wastewater from Mushroom Farm for Chlorella vulgaris Cultivation: Experimental and Kinetic Studies on Algal Growth and Pollutant Removal

Ivan Siric et al.

Summary: The potential use of carbon dioxide (CO2) and wastewater from a mushroom farm for the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae was investigated. A microcontroller-based prototype was constructed to capture and mix CO2 for the cultivation of C. vulgaris. The results showed that the prototype maintained desirable CO2 levels and achieved high algal biomass production and wastewater treatment efficiency.

Optimization of the phytoremediation conditions of wastewater in post-treatment by Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes: kinetic model for pollutants removal

Pierre Ntakiyiruta et al.

Summary: This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for pollutants removal using aquatic plants, Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes, as a phytoremediation post-treatment. The experiment followed a complete factorial design and used a global desirability function to determine the optimal conditions. It was found that E. crassipes is more effective in removing phosphorus and nitrates, while P. stratiotes is highly efficient in removing ammonium ions and chemical oxygen demand (COD).

Kinetics and prediction modeling of heavy metal phytoremediation from glass industry effluent by water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)

J. Singh et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the effectiveness of water hyacinth in reducing heavy metals from glass industry effluent, with the most efficiency observed at 25% effluent concentration. Water hyacinth exhibited optimal growth performance while removing heavy metals, and prediction models were successfully used to forecast metal absorption by the plant.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of domestic sewage sludge (SS) on the plant-soil system in sandy soils. The results showed that SS addition significantly increased soil nutrient contents and aboveground productivity, as well as enhanced plant coverage. Additionally, SS addition increased soil organic carbon and nitrogen stocks, as well as dissolved organic carbon contents and fluorescence intensities.

Kinetic Studies on Delignification and Heavy Metals Uptake by Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) Mushroom Cultivated on Agro-Industrial Wastes

Pankaj Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of agro-industrial waste for sustainable production of Shiitake mushrooms. The results show that moistening the mushroom substrate with treated dairy plant and sugar mill wastewaters significantly increases nutrient levels and improves mushroom yield. A 50% concentration of both wastewaters produced the best results. In addition, kinetic studies using a first-order-based model accurately predicted substrate delignification and heavy metal uptake by the mushrooms.

Changes of a Landfill Leachate Toxicity as a Result of Treatment With Phragmites australis and Ceratophyllum demersum-A Case Study

Agata Szymanska-Pulikowska et al.

Summary: Most phytoremediation studies focus on common plants and lack simultaneous assessment of pollutant removal effectiveness with various plants. Studies show significant differences in pollutant removal efficiency between emergent and submergent macrophytes at lower concentrations, but toxicity issues still exist in treated leachate samples.

Comparative Evaluation of CO2 Fixation of Microalgae Strains at Various CO2 Aeration Conditions

Jungsu Park et al.

Summary: The study investigated microalgal CO2 fixation under different concentrations and loading rates, identifying Chlorella sp. as the optimal strain. CO2 fixation was highly dependent on both the CO2 loading rate and concentration, with the highest fixation rate achieved at 15% CO2 concentration and 43.2 L/L-d loading rate. Proper CO2 loading rate is essential for effective CO2 fixation in high-strength CO2 gas streams.

Summary: The research demonstrates the effectiveness of water hyacinth in treating organic pollutants and nutrients in textile effluents. There is a strong positive correlation between water hyacinth biomass and NH3-N, tK-N, organic-N, pH, and EC. Removal kinetics generally favor pseudo-first-order except for organic-N.

Malihe Barahoei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the suitability of using Chlorella vulgaris for brackish water desalination, finding that modifying the culture medium resulted in enhanced microalgae growth and salt removal efficiency. The results suggest that Na+ ions are adsorbed on the Chlorella vulgaris cell surface, contributing to the desalination process.
