Towards sweetness classification of orange cultivars using short-wave NIR spectroscopy

Ayesha Zeb et al.

Summary: This research evaluates the potential of short-wave NIR spectroscopy and direct sweetness classification approach for Pakistani cultivars of orange. The study finds a good correlation between NIR spectra and sensory assessment, suggesting that a direct classification approach is more suitable for machine-learning-based orange sweetness classification.

Online Inspection of Browning in Yali Pears Using Visible-Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Interpretable Spectrogram-Based CNN Modeling

Yong Hao et al.

Summary: This study conducted online discriminant analysis on healthy Yali pears and those with different degrees of browning using visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that the prediction accuracy of the original spectrum combined with a 1D-CNN deep learning model reached 100% for the test sets of browned pears and healthy pears. Features extracted by the 1D-CNN method were converted into images by Gramian angular field (GAF) for PCA visual analysis, showing that deep learning had good performance in extracting features. In conclusion, Vis-NIR spectroscopy combined with the 1D-CNN discriminant model can realize online detection of browning in Yali pears.

1-Methylcyclopropene delays degradation of peel greenness but induces internal physiological disorders in cold-stored fruit of interspecific pears

Theint Thandar Latt et al.

Summary: The 'Greensis' pear cultivar is highly regarded due to its crispness, juiciness, and strong resistance to scab disease. It was found that treating cold-stored pears with 1-MCP for 16 hr at 22 degrees C can maintain postharvest storability and metabolic activity. However, 1-MCP treatment resulted in higher incidence of cortex browning and cavities in the pears.

Rapid and nondestructive prediction of firmness, soluble solids content, and pH in kiwifruit using Vis-NIR spatially resolved spectroscopy

Te Ma et al.

Summary: This paper presents an evaluation of kiwifruit properties using a visible-near-infrared spectroscopic system. The study shows that firmer kiwifruits have higher degrees of light scattering inside. Calibration models were constructed to predict fruit firmness and soluble solids content using the system.

Field Application of a Vis/NIR Hyperspectral Imaging System for Nondestructive Evaluation of Physicochemical Properties in 'Madoka' Peaches

Kyeong Eun Jang et al.

Summary: Extensive research has been conducted on the in-field nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of the physicochemical properties of 'Madoka' peaches using a snapshot-based hyperspectral imaging (HSI) approach. The results show that the HSI system with integrated HSI software has promising potential for analyzing the physicochemical properties of 'Madoka' peaches in the field. The prediction accuracy of a* values and SSC content is relatively high, while the accuracy of firmness and TA content is relatively low.

Alleviation of Vascular Bundle Browning in the Japanese Pear 'Rinka' by Preharvest Application of Ethephon

Hiroko Hayama et al.

Summary: Vascular bundle browning (VBB) occurs in the flesh tissue of Japanese pear "Rinka" during storage at 4℃. The application of ethephon reduces VBB occurrence, while treatment with 1-MCP increases VBB development.

Preharvest 1-methylcyclopropene treatment effects on fruit quality attributes and targeted metabolites in 'Wonhwang' pears stored at room temperature after cold storage

Hnin Phyu Lwin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of preharvest 1-MCP spray treatment on fruit quality attributes and targeted metabolites in 'Wonhwang' Asian pears. The treatment led to higher SSC levels in the fruit, but also aggravated flesh browning. It also increased the contents of certain amino acids in the fruit during the shelf-life period after cold storage.

Nondestructive simultaneous prediction of internal browning disorder and quality attributes in 'Rocha' pear (Pyrus communis L.) using VIS-NIR spectroscopy

Sandra Cruz et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of predicting the soluble solids content, firmness, and internal browning disorders in 'Rocha' pears using a single VIS-NIR spectroscopic measurement. Calibration models were built using individual and/or average side spectra, with SVM showing the best performance for predicting SSC and firmness. For internal disorder detection, PLS-LDA on raw spectra presented the highest sensitivity. The results demonstrate the feasibility of achieving accurate predictions for pears' firmness and SSC, as well as detecting internal disorders using a single VISNIR spectral measurement.
