Prevalence of diabetic macular edema based on optical coherence tomography in people with diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

James H. B. Im et al.

Summary: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common cause of vision loss in individuals with diabetes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an effective method for accurately diagnosing and detecting DME at an early stage. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the global prevalence of OCT-diagnosed DME. The analysis included seven studies and found that approximately 5.5% of people with diabetes have DME. There was no significant difference in prevalence between high-income countries and low-to-middle-income countries. These findings highlight the importance of educating physicians and individuals with diabetes about the early detection and treatment of DME using OCT.

Two-year outcomes of the APOLLON observational study of intravitreal aflibercept monotherapy in France in patients with diabetic macular edema

Jean-Francois Korobelnik et al.

Summary: The APOLLON study evaluated the effectiveness of intravitreal aflibercept (IVT-AFL) treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME) over 24 months in routine clinical practice in France. The study found that treatment-naive patients achieved significant gains in visual acuity, while previously treated patients maintained prior gains.

Diabetic Macular Edema: Current Understanding, Molecular Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications

Jingfa Zhang et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema are major causes of vision loss and blindness in working-age adults, with Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) playing a key role in their pathogenesis. Intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF agents is the main treatment for DME, but not all patients respond well to this therapy.

Efficacy and safety of aflibercept therapy for diabetic macular edema: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Sangeetha Santhakumaran et al.

Summary: Aflibercept is a safe and effective therapy option for diabetic macular edema (DME) in the clinical setting, showing better results compared to laser photocoagulation. The evidence regarding comparisons with bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and dexamethasone is mixed and limited.

A novel tool to assess the quality of RWE to guide the management of retinal disease

Robert P. Finger et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the development of a user-friendly tool for assessing the quality of real-world evidence in retinal disease, based on the validated GRACE guidelines. The tool aims to simplify the evaluation and comparison of published evidence in the field, providing guidance on treatment details, outcome measures, study population, and controlling for bias, to support clinical decision-making.

VEGFR1 signaling in retinal angiogenesis and microinflammation

Akiyoshi Uemura et al.

Summary: VEGFR1 and its ligands play important roles in angiogenesis and microinflammatory cascades within the retina, but the mechanisms of their actions remain unclear, the competition for receptor binding and heterodimerization complicates the understanding of their relative contributions.
