In situ, real-time imaging of redox-active species on Al/Cu galvanic couple and corrosion inhibition with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and octylphosphonic acid

Dzevad K. Kozlica et al.

Summary: This study investigates the localized electrochemical activity in the Al/Cu galvanic pair under the corrosion potential in an aggressive chloride electrolyte, and the effect of organic inhibitors MBI and OPA on arresting corrosion processes. SECM and SVET techniques were used to identify local anodic and cathodic sites on the surface. The electrochemical activity in the galvanic pair significantly decreased when the copper surface was coated with an MBI-containing film. SECM successfully visualized spatially resolved differences in local electrochemical activity related to the inhibitor action.

Corrosion inhibition of copper and aluminium by 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and octylphosphonic acid-Surface pre-treatment and method of film preparation

Dzevad K. Kozlica et al.

Summary: The optimal surface pre-treatment conditions for improved adsorption of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and octylphosphonic acid (OPA) on copper and aluminium substrates were investigated. It was found that the method of film formation played a crucial role in the effectiveness of the inhibitors on copper and aluminium.

The Relation Between the Microstructure of Aluminum Alloy 7075-T6 and the Type of Cerium Salt in the Formation of the Cerium Conversion Layer

Ingrid Milosev et al.

Summary: The deposition of the cerium conversion layer on aluminum alloy 7075-T6 is affected by factors such as the type of cerium salt used and the type of intermetallic particles. The study found that the type of anion of the cerium salt affects the formation of the conversion layer, and the corrosion protectiveness is highest for acetate salt. The precipitation of large Ce-containing deposits is governed by the dealloying of intermetallic particles.

Roles of Chloride Ions in the Formation of Corrosion Protective Films on Copper

Dzevad K. Kozlica et al.

Summary: Under certain conditions, chloride ions play a dual role in the formation of a polymerized [Cu-Cl-MBI](n) film, as confirmed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and focused ion beam microscopy analysis. Additionally, the formation of the inhibitor layer in NaCl solution showed outstanding resistance to degradation.

Synergistic effect of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and octylphosphonic acid as corrosion inhibitors for copper and aluminium - An electrochemical, XPS, FTIR and DFT study

Dzevad K. Kozlica et al.

Summary: The inhibitory action of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and octylphosphonic acid (OPA) on copper and aluminum in NaCl solution was investigated. While MBI was found to be a good inhibitor for copper but not for aluminum, OPA behaved complementarily. Evidence suggested that OPA changed the bonding of MBI on the copper surface, resulting in a thicker and more protective organic film.

When all intermetallics dealloy in AA2024-T3: Quantifying early stage intermetallic corrosion kinetics under immersion

Matteo Olgiati et al.

Summary: A hyphenated optical-electrochemical technique and image analysis protocol were used to quantify global and local corrosion processes of intermetallic compounds (IMs). The study found an early composition-dependent activation of IMs attributed to dealloying, followed by trenching initiated at matrix locations adjacent to previously dealloyed IMs, leading to concentric trenching. Dealloying kinetics were composition-dependent while trenching kinetics were composition and size independent for IMs.
