An overview of metal-organic frameworks and their magnetic composites for the removal of pollutants

Chuanjin Wang et al.

Summary: Due to serious water pollution, sewage disposal has gained significant attention in the water industry. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted interest in adsorption and separation due to their complex structures and adjustable pore sizes. Magnetic MOFs, which combine large surface area and easy recovery, show great potential in adsorbing and separating pollutants. This review summarizes recent research progress on adsorption and separation of ions, dyes, and other contaminants in aqueous environments using different types of MOFs (magnetic and non-magnetic) and their magnetic composites (Fe3O4@MOF). Factors influencing pollutant adsorption, as well as thermodynamic and kinetic effects, are discussed with detailed examples. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for further development of magnetic MOFs are discussed.
