CD4+/CD8+Ratio and Growth Differentiation Factor 8 Levels in Peripheral Blood of Large Canine Males Are Useful Parameters to Build an Age Prediction Model

Han-Jun Lee et al.

Summary: By measuring CD4+ and CD8+ cells and humoral components in canine peripheral blood, we developed an age prediction model. The results showed that the CD4+/CD8+ ratio and GDF8 level were significantly correlated with age in dogs, with better correlations in male dogs and Belgian Malinois breed. Using these two markers, a quadratic linear mixed model provided the best fit for age prediction.

Agreement between In-Clinics and Virus Neutralization Tests in Detecting Antibodies against Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)

Sara Meazzi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the agreement between the commercial in-clinics VacciCheck test and virus neutralization (VN) in measuring antibody titer against canine distemper virus. Results showed that VacciCheck demonstrated high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, and there was good agreement between the two methods. Retesting is recommended in uncertain cases.

Study on the Canine Adenovirus Type 1 (CAdV-1) Infection in Domestic Dogs in Southern Italy

Francesco Mira et al.

Summary: A study conducted in southern Italy analyzed samples collected from dogs suspected of infectious gastrointestinal disease. Canine adenovirus type 1 (CAdV-1) was detected in dead stray dogs, either alone or in mixed infections with other viruses, and was found to involve the central nervous system tissues. Sequence analysis revealed genetic heterogeneity of CAdV-1 in Italy and a closer relation to older strains collected from other countries. These findings provide important insights into the epidemiology and evolution of CAdV-1 genomic variants.

Canine parvovirus is shed infrequently by cats without diarrhoea in multi-cat environments

Maura Carrai et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate low-level faecal CPV shedding in multi-cat environments in Australia and Italy. The results showed that shedding of CPV by cats in these environments is uncommon, while FPV shedding is more common, suggesting that domestic cats are not significant reservoirs of CPV.

Discrepancy Between In-clinic and Haemagglutination-Inhibition Tests in Detecting Maternally-Derived Antibodies Against Canine Parvovirus in Puppies

Paola Dall'Ara et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the reliability of in-clinic ELISA test in determining protective antibodies against CPV in adult dogs, but found discrepancies in MDA titers in unvaccinated puppies. The in-clinic ELISA test kit may be a useful tool to detect and quantify CPV MDA, providing information for optimal timing of puppy vaccinations and reducing vaccination failures due to interference by maternally-derived antibodies.
