Insights into the formation of carboxymethyl chitosan-nisin nanogels for sustainable antibacterial activity

Summary: Nisin-loaded carboxymethyl chitosan nanogels (CN NGs) were prepared through a combination method of electrostatic self-assembly and chemical cross-linking, demonstrating good dispersion and spherical structure. The main driving force in the formation of CN NGs was found to be the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between nisin and CMCS. Additionally, the CN NGs exhibited controlled release behavior of nisin and excellent antimicrobial activity, indicating their potential as a bio-preservative in the food industry.

The therapeutic response was monitored using clinical and bacteriological cure indicators. Phyto-Bomat showed promising results in mastitis treatment without causing udder irritation, either alone or in combination with antibiotics.

The Prevalence of Escherichia coli Derived from Bovine Clinical Mastitis and Distribution of Resistance to Antimicrobials in Part of Jiangsu Province, China

Summary: Bovine mastitis is a common disease in dairy farms, leading to reduced milk production and quality. Pathogenic bacteria enter the mammary gland through contagious or environmental routes. The study investigated the epidemiological characteristics and drug resistance of bovine mastitis pathogens in northern Jiangsu. Findings showed that E. coli was the most prevalent bacteria, followed by K. pneumoniae and Staphylococcus spp. Susceptibility testing revealed that gentamicin and tetracycline were effective against E. coli, while beta-lactams showed resistance. Genome sequencing and comparative genomic analysis of bovine mastitis-associated Staphylococcus aureus strains from India

Molecular identification, antimicrobial resistance and virulence gene profiling of Staphylococcus spp. associated with bovine sub-clinical mastitis in Bangladesh

Summary: This study investigates the diversity and antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus species causing sub-clinical mastitis in dairy herds in Bangladesh. The most predominant species identified were S. chromogenes, S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, S. aureus, and S. sciuri. High levels of antimicrobial resistance were observed, and multi-drug resistance isolates were identified in all five species. Several risk factors for SCM caused by different species were also identified, including age, lactation stage, udder condition, use of antimicrobials, and history of previous clinical mastitis.

Subclinical mastitis in dairy cows in south-Asian countries: a review of risk factors and etiology to prioritize control measures

Summary: Mastitis is a major production disease in South-Asian countries, causing significant economic losses for dairy farmers. Udder health control programs have not been introduced in these countries. A literature review was conducted to describe the dairy sector, the prevalence and causal agents of subclinical mastitis (SCM), risk factors for mastitis occurrence, and suggested control measures. The review found variations in the prevalence of SCM across the selected countries, with non-aureus staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., and Escherichia coli being the common causal agents. Risk factors included stall feeding, higher stock density, poor hygiene, and peri-parturient diseases. Control measures suggested improving hygiene, implementing dry cow therapy, and routine screening for SCM. Further research is needed to fully understand the determinants of SCM. Overall, this study provides an overview of udder health in South-Asia and serves as a basis for udder health control programs in the region.

Evaluation of a povidone-iodine and chitosan-based barrier teat dip in the prevention of mastitis in dairy cows

Summary: Through a study on species differentiation within Corynebacterium spp., it was found that C. bovis and C. amycolatum are the main species, showing significant differences in udder health groups. Considering somatic cell count, it was observed that C. bovis and C. amycolatum have different patterns of infection in clinical mastitis.
