Invited review: Assessment of body condition score and body fat reserves in relation to insulin sensitivity and metabolic phenotyping in dairy cows

M. H. Ghaffari et al.

Summary: The purpose of this article is to review body condition scoring and the role of body fat reserves in relation to insulin sensitivity and metabolic phenotyping. This article summarizes body condition scoring assessment methods and the differences between subcutaneous and visceral fat depots in dairy cows. The majority of studies have focused on subcutaneous fat, and only a few have explored visceral fat using noninvasive methods. Several studies have shown that insulin resistance in adipose tissue develops during the prepartum period, especially in overconditioned cows. Nonoptimal body conditions exhibit marked abnormalities in metabolic and endocrine function. Overall, reducing the number of cows with nonoptimal body conditions seems to be the most practical solution to improve profitability in dairy farming.

Transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval in cattle: State-of-the-art and its impact on the in vitro fertilization embryo production outcome

Luis B. Ferre et al.

Summary: Transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval (OPU) and in vitro embryo production (IVP) in cattle have made significant progress in recent years due to better understanding of their potential. The combination of OPU and IVP (OPU-IVP) is commercially used worldwide and offers advantages such as increased number of embryos and pregnancies, faster genetic progress, wider range of oocyte sources, and reduced sperm requirement.

Feeding reduced levels of trace minerals in proteinate form and selenium-yeast to transition cows: Performance, trace minerals, and antioxidant status, peripheral neutrophil activity, and oocyte quality

Guilherme Gomes da Silva et al.

Summary: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of inorganic trace minerals and reduced levels of trace minerals by using proteinate forms and Se-yeast in transition cow diets. The study showed that feeding reduced levels of trace minerals in proteinate form resulted in increased milk yield and protein content, but decreased milk fat content and affected blood mineral concentrations and mammary gland cell activity. Therefore, more research is needed to evaluate the effects of reducing trace mineral levels in proteinate form and Se-yeast on production and fertility measurements.

Enhanced progesterone support during stimulated cycles of transvaginal follicular aspiration improves bovine in vitro embryo production

Summary: The production of cattle embryos in vitro requires maturation of oocytes in vitro before fertilization. Progesterone support during ovarian stimulation can improve the success of in vitro production. This study investigated the effects of increased peripheral progesterone concentrations during ovarian stimulation cycles.

Role of functional fatty acids in modulation of reproductive potential in livestock

Xiangzhou Zeng et al.

Summary: Fatty acids not only serve as energy sources, but also have significant impacts on the reproductive potential of livestock by influencing follicular development, oocyte maturation, embryo development, endometrial receptivity, and placental vascular development. However, there is a lack of studies on the deeper mechanisms and optimal fatty acid requirements for specific physiological stages. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the combination and synergy of functional fatty acids and establish optimal fatty acid requirements for specific stages to improve reproductive potential in livestock.

The relationship between bovine blastocyst formation in vitro and follicular fluid amino acids

Marzyieh Sanei et al.

Summary: This study used the ovum pick-up (OPU) procedure to recover oocytes from Holstein heifers and collected follicular fluid to establish a link between follicular amino acids and blastocyst formation. The results showed that heifers that produced blastocysts had higher follicular glutamine concentrations and lower aspartate levels. Furthermore, there was a correlation between blastocyst formation and aspartate or glutamine. Glutamine was found to be the greatest predictor of blastocyst formation.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between body condition score (BCS) and BCS change with pregnancy per first artificial insemination (P/AI1) in Holstein cows. The study found that cows with low BCS and significant BCS reduction closer to first artificial insemination had lower odds of pregnancy.

Impact of oocyte donor age and breed on in vitro embryo production in cattle, and relationship of dairy and beef embryo recipients on pregnancy and the subsequent performance of offspring: A review

Pietro S. Baruselli et al.

Summary: The combination of genomic selection and in vitro embryo production (IVEP) using oocytes from heifer calves offers a powerful technology platform to reduce generation intervals and increase genetic gains in cattle. While heifer calves exhibit a good follicular response to FSH stimulation and oocyte retrieval through ovum pick-up (OPU), the efficiency of OPU/IVEP remains lower compared to peripubertal heifers and cows. Indicus cattle tend to have more follicles and achieve a better outcome in IVEP compared to taurus cattle. Ongoing optimization is needed to fully realize the potential of OPU/IVEP in young donors.

Analysis of bovine blastocysts indicates ovarian stimulation does not induce chromosome errors, nor discordance between inner-cell mass and trophectoderm lineages

Summary: In this study, it was found that ovarian stimulation did not increase the levels of aneuploidy in blastocysts generated from OPU-IVP cycles in cattle. Most abnormalities consisted of meiotic trisomies. Blastocysts derived from in vivo donors were all euploid, indicating that maturation is primarily responsible for aneuploidy induction. Moreover, there was a high degree of concordance in the incidence of aneuploidy between different lineages of blastocysts.

Summary: The study found that adding colony-stimulating factor 2 (CSF2) and serum to bovine embryos cultured in vitro can impact embryo development and the phenotype of resulting calves. Serum increased the percentage of cleaved embryos developing into blastocysts, while CSF2 had a smaller effect. Gestation length was shortest for pregnancies established with serum-treated embryos. Adding CSF2 during the preimplantation period influenced the accumulation of intramuscular and subcutaneous fat in resultant calves.
