Coinfection of cattle in Virginia with Theileria orientalis Ikeda genotype and Anaplasma marginale

Summary: Theileria orientalis Ikeda is a newly identified agent of bovine infectious anemia in the United States, and coinfection with Anaplasma marginale has been reported in some cattle. A duplex real-time PCR was developed for both A. marginale and T. orientalis, with high sensitivity and specificity. The study in Virginia showed co-infection by these two agents of bovine infectious anemia, indicating the potential for similar patterns in other regions with endemic infections.
