Theory and practice of Bayesian and frequentist frameworks for network meta-analysis

Behnam Sadeghirad et al.

Summary: Network meta-analysis (NMA) is a statistical method used to synthesize evidence for comparing the benefits and harms of multiple treatments. Bayesian and frequentist frameworks are commonly used, with Bayesian models being more flexible but requiring additional assumptions and statistical expertise. This paper discusses the theoretical aspects of Bayesian and frequentist models for NMA, as well as the applications and considerations of contrast-synthesis and arm-synthesis NMAs. Simulation and empirical studies show that there are rarely important differences in the results of Bayesian and frequentist approaches, suggesting that network meta-analysts should focus on model features rather than the statistical framework.

Assessing lake ecosystem health from disturbed anthropogenic landscapes: Spatial patterns and driving mechanisms

Yaoyao Han et al.

Summary: Freshwater lake ecosystems are under increasing pressure from anthropogenic activities worldwide. This study examines the impact of environmental and socioeconomic factors on lake health in China's densely populated regions. Results show that lake degradation varies spatially and is influenced by climate factors, land-use practices, and socioeconomic drivers. It is found that the distance of the lake from the city center is the predominant factor affecting lake health among multiple drivers.

Quantitative assessment and comparison of urban patterns in Germany and the United States

Andreas Schmitt et al.

Summary: In this study, two methods are proposed to evaluate the homogeneity of settlement landscapes and identify settlement clusters. The urban land patterns are described using quantitative spatial methods. German urban areas show higher heterogeneity within smaller neighborhoods with almost symmetric density distribution, while the opposite is observed in the US. German urban areas become more homogeneous with increasing size, whereas the US shows the opposite trend. This approach can be extended to urban patterns of any spatial unit worldwide.

Summary: The rate of LULC transformation to built-up areas is high in peri-urban areas of Indian metropolitan cities, with Delhi NCR experiencing significant increase in built-up area from 1990 to 2018. Migration and tertiary sector employment are identified as key drivers of built-up expansion in the region. Spatial heterogeneity in explanatory variables is observed throughout the study area. This study can provide valuable insights for urban policy makers and planners in developing master plans for cities like Delhi NCR.

Linking urbanization and air quality together: A review and a perspective on the future sustainable urban development

Xiaoyan Zhang et al.

Summary: Urbanization, along with industrialization and economic development, has had a profound impact on human society and its living environment. Air quality, as one of the most noticeable environmental factors, is currently a significant issue in urban areas of many low- and mid-income countries. This review examines the history of air pollution during various stages of urbanization in different income countries and provides a general understanding of the relationship between urbanization and air pollution. It suggests the development of preventive measures against environmental pollution during the process of urbanization in order to achieve sustainable urbanization with favorable air quality.

Urban Sprawl as Policy Sprawl: Distinguishing Chinese Capitalism's Suburban Spatial Fix

Julie T. Miao et al.

Summary: The study found that China's urban sprawl is systematically linked to policy sprawl, which is magnified by the contradictions inherent within policies and their specific development in China. The concept of policy sprawl distinguishes itself from policy creep and churn, making a unique contribution to the literature on policy mobility. By using special economic zones and featured town policies in China as examples, the study illustrates the concept of policy sprawl.

Summary: Low-resolution abundance data can pose challenges in assessing species at-risk status, as it may lead to low statistical power, ineffective weighting of site-specific trends into global trends, and inappropriate spatial scale propagation. Bayesian methods can provide a probabilistic statement to support recommendations for at-risk status.

Infrastructure inequality is a characteristic of urbanization

Bhartendu Pandey et al.

Summary: This paper examines inequalities in infrastructure distribution in the context of urbanization, focusing on India and South Africa. The study finds that South Africa exhibits greater infrastructure inequalities compared to India, and urban inequalities are more prevalent than rural inequalities. Moreover, the analysis shows that urban inequalities in infrastructure provisioning and availability increase as the spatial scale expands. Findings also indicate that India experiences greater concentration of inequalities at coarse spatial scales. Additionally, the paper reveals the correlation between urban infrastructure inequalities and urbanization levels in terms of demographics, economy, and infrastructure development.

Urban shrinkage in a developing context: Rethinking China's present and future trends

Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study examines urban shrinkage in Chinese cities using land-use data and nightlight data. The study found that only a small percentage of cities experienced significant urban population shrinkage, primarily resource-based cities in the Northeast region. Lack of employment opportunities, stagnant economic growth, and low birth rate were identified as important drivers of urban shrinkage. Low levels of urbanization and intra-regional rural-to-urban migration helped prevent urban shrinkage, but it may increase in the future due to unbalanced regional development and increasing urbanization. The study suggests that sustainable development of urbanization should be promoted to deal with and prevent urban shrinkage.

In pursuit of sustainability - Spatio-temporal pathways of urban growth patterns in the world's largest megacities

Saurav Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the growth patterns of 33 megacities worldwide and found that urban growth primarily occurred through edge expansion, but the shares of infilling and outlying growth modes have increased. Based on the co-occurrence and changing dominance of these three growth modes, four pathways of urban growth patterns were identified. The majority of cities followed the oscillating/ping pong pathway, characterized by edge expansion and phases of infilling and outlying growth, while ten cities followed the transition-to-densification pathway, indicating a shift towards infilling as the dominant growth mode.

Land-based urbanization in China: Mismatched land development in the post-financial crisis era

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Mismatched land development is a widespread issue in developing countries experiencing rapid expansion. The study finds that while urban expansion has some short-term impacts on economic recovery, the lack of actual demand leads to long-term mismatches in land development, with the most severe cases found in the northeast and northwest regions of China. The increasing dependence of local governments on urban land profits exacerbates the mismatched land development, particularly for county-level cities, indicating a need for a change in the land-based urbanization pattern.

Neoliberalization of urban planning and spatial inequalities in Asian megacities: Focus on Tokyo, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Mumbai

Tetsuo Kidokoro et al.

Summary: Asian megacities have undergone significant transformation and increasing spatial inequality due to globalization and neoliberal shifts. This paper investigates the changes in urban planning systems influenced by the neoliberalization of urban policies and resulting spatial inequality through case studies in Tokyo, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Mumbai. The study reveals that the urbanization process in Asian megacities is characterized by the coexistence of self-shaped urban areas (SUAs) and planned urban areas (PUAs). Furthermore, it concludes that a neoliberal shift in urban planning has occurred since the 1990s, leading to significant spatial inequality between SUAs and PUAs, and variations in urbanization processes and spatial morphology across cities.
