Pullulan-Based Hydrogels in Wound Healing and Skin Tissue Engineering Applications: A Review

Collins N. Elangwe et al.

Summary: Wound healing is a complex process aimed at creating new tissues and restoring anatomical functions. Wound dressings, made from natural or synthetic biomaterials, play a crucial role in protecting the wound and accelerating healing. Polysaccharide polymers, particularly pullulan, have gained attention for their non-toxic, antibacterial, biocompatible, hemostatic, and nonimmunogenic properties. Hydrogels based on pullulan have shown promise as wound dressings due to their high water retention capacity, which creates a moist environment and promotes wound healing. The incorporation of pullulan with other biocompatible polymers, such as chitosan and gelatin, has been explored to enhance its properties for wound dressing applications.

Advances in Functional Hydrogel Wound Dressings: A Review

Zihao Shen et al.

Summary: One of the most advanced research issues in hydrogel dressing is to enhance their functionality for improved therapeutic effects. Functional hydrogel dressings can adjust their properties to different wound types, create an optimal healing environment, and provide prolonged drug release. Despite extensive research in this field, there is a lack of comprehensive studies summarizing the development of functional hydrogel dressings. To address this gap, we provide a detailed overview of the preparation mechanisms, functional effects, and future trends of functional hydrogel dressings.

Hybrid Hydrogels for Neomycin Delivery: Synergistic Effects of Natural/Synthetic Polymers and Proteins

Maria Bercea et al.

Summary: This study presents new physical hydrogels obtained through the freezing/thawing method, using pullulan (PULL) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as polymers, bovine serum albumin (BSA) as protein, and reduced glutathione (GSH) as a tripeptide. SEM analysis revealed the formation of porous networks with average pore size between 15.7 μm and 24.5 μm. The hydrogels exhibited viscoelastic behavior typical of networks, with strength influenced by protein content. Infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. The hybrid hydrogels showed sustained drug release behavior, with optimal formulations demonstrating release of neomycin trisulfate salt hydrate over 480 minutes.

Self-Healing Behavior of Polymer/Protein Hybrid Hydrogels

Maria Bercea

Summary: This paper presents the viscoelastic properties of new hybrid hydrogels containing PVA, HPC, BSA, and GSH. The hydrogels form a weak network due to partial BSA unfolding in the presence of GSH after heating. By applying freezing/thawing cycles, a stable porous network structure with elastic properties is designed, and the hydrogels exhibit self-healing abilities. The effects of BSA content, deformation, and temperature on the self-healing ability are discussed.
