Evaluation of the rejuvenation of asphalt by means of oil-saturated porous aggregates

Raquel Casado-Barrasa et al.

Summary: Road degradation is a serious issue for asset managers, mainly caused by the aging of asphalt due to factors like temperature, climate, and traffic loads. Preventive maintenance is crucial to reduce the need for corrective measures and improve asphalt durability. Research shows that using encapsulated rejuvenator is an effective method to achieve long-term performance mixtures with reduced cracking.

A systematic review of the utilization of waste materials as aggregate replacement in stone matrix asphalt mixes

Ali Mohammed Babalghaith et al.

Summary: The daily utilization of a large amount of raw materials is depleting natural resources rapidly, leading researchers to seek ways to reduce the environmental impact of waste materials. One method being explored is the use of waste materials as substitute for natural materials in construction, such as in road pavements. This paper reviews previous studies on the use of waste materials as aggregate replacement in stone matrix asphalt mix and its impact on the performance of asphalt pavements. Future research should focus on investigating other waste materials that can improve mix design and enhance pavement performance.

Sustainable design of pavement systems in highly urbanized context: A lifecycle assessment

Md. Uzzal Hossain et al.

Summary: This study uses the lifecycle assessment (LCA) technique to design and evaluate the environmental performance of commonly adopted pavement systems in a highly urbanized context, using a case study in Hong Kong. The results show that rigid pavement has higher impacts in terms of global warming potential and mineral extraction, while flexible pavement has higher impacts in terms of human health, ecosystem quality damage, and resource damage. Material production and transportation significantly contribute to the overall impact in both pavement systems. Therefore, the use of more recycled and environmentally friendly materials can enhance the environmental sustainability of pavement systems.

Assessment of freezing and thawing cycle (FTC) effects on mixed mode I/III fracture toughness and work of fracture of HMA asphalt mixtures

Pegah Jafari Haghighatpour et al.

Summary: This research examines the effects of freeze/thaw cycles on the fracture characteristics of asphalt mixtures. Through a series of mixed mode I/III fracture experiments using the ENDB test configuration, it is found that the freezing and thawing mechanism has a negative influence on the low temperature cracking resistance of HMA mixtures. However, the reduction of cracking resistance becomes smaller with an increase in the number of freeze/thaw cycles.
