Phosphonated Ionomers of Intrinsic Microporosity with Partially Ordered Structure for High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Xi Sun et al.

Summary: A novel partially ordered phosphonated ionomer (PIM-P) was designed as the catalyst binder to improve mass transport in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The rigid and contorted structure of PIM-P forms a robust gas transmission channel and provides stable proton conduction sites. The membrane electrode assembly with PIM-P ionomer exhibits a significantly higher peak power density compared to commercial or porous catalyst binders at 160°C under an H2/O2 condition.

High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells with High Phosphoric Acid Retention

Katie H. Lim et al.

Summary: This article reports quaternary ammonium-biphosphate ion-pair high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) that do not lose phosphoric acids under normal and accelerated stress conditions. Energetics and computational studies show that the proposed ion-pair system has higher interaction energy and allows for containing all phosphoric acids in the membrane electrode assemblies. In addition, polar interactions between the phosphonic acid ionomer and phosphoric acid explain acid retention in the electrodes of the ion-pair HT-PEMFCs.

Phosphoric-Acid Retention in High-Temperature Proton-Exchange Membranes

Hongying Tang et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to mitigate the leaching of phosphoric acid (PA) in high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC). Strategies such as introducing phosphonic acid by covalent bond, using ion-pairs interaction and siphoning effect, and blending with inorganic nanoparticles have been proposed. Among these strategies, the siphoning effect is the most efficient method to retain PA and enable flexible operation within a wide temperature range.

Synergistically integrated phosphonated poly(pentafluorostyrene) for fuel cells

Vladimir Atanasov et al.

Summary: Phosphonated polymers have been proposed as anhydrous proton conductors for fuel cells, but anhydride formation lowers conductivity. By synergistically integrating phosphonated poly(pentafluorostyrene) and maintaining protonic conductivity above 200 degrees C, advanced fuel cells with peak power densities surpassing traditional materials have been achieved. This study presents a promising pathway for utilizing phosphonated polymers in high-performance fuel cells under hot and dry operating conditions.

High-performance proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis using a sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) membrane and ionomer

Ji Eun Park et al.

Summary: The sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) with a 50 mol.% degree of sulfonation, SPAES50, has been successfully synthesized for use in hydrocarbon-based membrane and ionomer applications in proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). The SPAES50 membrane and the SPAES50-based ionomer (P50) were found to exhibit excellent physical and electrochemical properties, leading to higher performance in PEMWE compared to the commercial Nafion (TM) membrane and ionomer. This study demonstrates the great potential of SPAES50 as a hydrocarbon-based membrane and ionomer for PEMWE applications.

Fast and Selective Ionic Transport: From Ion-Conducting Channels to Ion Exchange Membranes for Flow Batteries

Klaus-Dieter Kreuer et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of properly balanced ion-coordinating interactions over steric effects for selective ion transport in biological systems. It also emphasizes the relevance of steric effects for the selectivity of ionic transport through ion exchange membranes (IEMs). Reduced hydration leads to higher selectivity but lower transport rates, with near-perfect selectivity achieved through ion-conducting channels and sterically constrained transport in IEMs.
