Integration of microalgae cultivation and anaerobic co-digestion with dairy wastewater to enhance bioenergy and biochemicals production

Adi Kusmayadi et al.

Summary: A sequential anaerobic digestion and phycoremediation process was used to recover nutrients and remove pollutants from dairy wastewater while producing biomethane and biochemicals. The anaerobic digestion achieved a methane content of 53.7% and production rate of 0.17 L/L/d, along with significant removals of chemical oxygen demand, total solids, and volatile fatty acids. The digestate was then used to grow Chlorella sorokiniana SU-1, resulting in high removal efficiencies of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and COD. The microalgal biomass obtained was co-digested with dairy wastewater, leading to improved methane production performance.

Effect of dual physical modifications on structural and functional properties of gluten and whey protein: Ultrasound and microwave

Sayeh Mastani et al.

Summary: The effect of dual modification using ultrasound and microwave treatments on functional properties of wheat gluten protein (WGP) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) was investigated. Ultrasound treatment improved emulsion and foam properties, while microwave treatment decreased solubility of both proteins. However, foam stability was not significantly affected by microwave treatment. Ultrasound treatment at 100 W for 10 min showed the most positive effect on the functional and structural properties of both proteins. Zeta potential of both proteins decreased after dual physical modifications, but thermal stability improved after microwave treatment.

Bioconversion of Cheese Whey and Food By-Products by Phaeodactylum tricornutum into Fucoxanthin and n-3 Lc-PUFA through a Biorefinery Approach

Giovanni Luca Russo et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of using cheese whey, beet molasses, and corn steep liquor as alternative nutrient sources for cultivating Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The results show that cheese whey hydrolysate significantly enhances cell growth, while beet molasses increases biomass production and fucoxanthin yield. By optimizing the medium composition, the study achieved a biomass yield of 2.35 g L-1 and a fucoxanthin yield of 3.64 mg L-1. This research demonstrates the efficient production of fucoxanthin and other high-value products using food by-products from a biorefinery perspective.

Prospects of microalgae in nutraceuticals production with nanotechnology applications

Kai Yao Tan et al.

Summary: Nutraceutical supplements provide health benefits by fulfilling nutrient deficiencies and treating diseases. Microalgae, with their ability to synthesize high-value molecules through photosynthesis, have become a reliable source for abundant nutritional compounds. However, limited growth and biomass accumulation of some microalgae species have led to the use of nanoparticles as photocatalysts to enhance their yield rate. This review emphasizes the composition of microalgal biomass, the health perspectives of nutritional compounds, and the application of nanotechnology for improved microalgae production and harvesting. The results highlight the superior nutrient content of microalgal-based compounds compared to natural foods, while also emphasizing the need for further research on non-hazardous and sustainable nanotechnology.
