Cocoa Bean Shell as Promising Feedstock for the Production of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)

Marta Sanchez et al.

Summary: Cocoa bean shell (CBS), a by-product of the chocolate industry, was used as a substrate for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) production through fermentation with Bacillus firmus. Acid-thermal hydrolysis of CBS at 135 degrees C for 10 min yielded broths rich in fermentable sugars, which were employed as fermentation media. Significant polymer production was achieved from the non-centrifuged broth, indicating the importance of CBS solids in microorganism metabolism and PHB production. The study obtained promising results with PHB concentrations similar to or higher than those reported in previous studies on obtaining PHB from other agri-food residues.
