Recent Progress of Reclassification of the Genus Streptomyces

Hisayuki Komaki

Summary: This article reviews the reclassification of the genus Streptomyces in the past decade. Through molecular analysis and genome sequencing, it was found that 34 Streptomyces species needed to be reclassified into other genera, and 14 subspecies were reduced to four. In addition, 63 species were considered later heterotypic synonyms of previously recognized species. These reclassifications contribute to systematic taxonomy and provide important information for the search of useful bioactive substances.

Biosynthesis of polycyclopropanated high energy biofuels

Pablo Cruz-Morales et al.

Summary: This study produced polycyclopropanated fatty acids in bacteria, which can be converted into renewable fuels for energy-intensive applications. By exploring the chemical diversity encoded in bacterial genomes, the researchers identified and repurposed naturally occurring cyclopropanated molecules, significantly increasing production and synthesizing polycyclopropanated fatty acid methyl esters.

Reclassification of Streptomyces costaricanus and Streptomyces phaeogriseichromatogenes as later heterotypic synonyms of Streptomyces murinus

Hisayuki Komaki

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the taxonomic relationships among Streptomyces costaricanus, Streptomyces murinus and Streptomyces phaeogriseichromatogenes using multilocus sequence analysis and bioinformatics methods, revealing that these three strains should be classified as the same species. The presence of a similar set of secondary metabolite-biosynthetic gene clusters for polyketides and nonribosomal peptides further supported their similarity. Therefore, S. costaricanus and S. phaeogriseichromatogenes should be reclassified as later heterotypic synonyms of S. murinus.

antiSMASH 6.0: improving cluster detection and comparison capabilities

Kai Blin et al.

Summary: antiSMASH, a tool for detecting biosynthetic gene clusters in microorganisms, has been updated to version 6, which increases the supported cluster types, displays the structure of multi-modular BGCs, adds a new comparison algorithm, allows integration of results from other prediction tools, and improves detection of tailoring enzymes in RiPP clusters.

Multiple lineages of Streptomyces produce antimicrobials within passalid beetle galleries across eastern North America

Rita de Cassia Pessotti et al.

Summary: The study found that subsocial passalid beetles harbor multiple lineages of Streptomyces in their frass, producing a rich repertoire of antimicrobials to protect their galleries from pathogenic invasion. The metabolites detected in the frass displayed synergistic and antagonistic inhibition of a fungal entomopathogen, showcasing the complex interplay between insects and actinomycetes in defending against pathogens.
