Heteroatom Doping-Induced Defected Co3O4 Electrode for High-Performance Lithium Oxygen Battery

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that heteroatom doping is a feasible strategy to enhance the conductivity and catalytic activity of Co3O4 electrocatalyst. The optimized Co3O4 cathode with abundant oxygen vacancies accelerates the oxygen reduction/evolution reaction kinetics and suppresses parasitic reactions caused by LiO2.

Integrated analysis to investigate the viability of using Thorium-based fuel instead of traditional fuel in CANDU reactor

A. Abdelghafar Galahom et al.

Summary: This study provides an integrated insight into the possibility of operating a CANDU reactor with thorium-based fuel types. Using the MCNPX code, a 3D model of the CANDU bundle was designed. The study investigated the use of thorium mixed with 235U, 233U, and rgPu in separate fuel cycles and compared their performance with the traditional fuel. The study also examined important neutronic and safety parameters and evaluated the concentrations of rgPu and minor actinides for the proposed fuels from both neutronic and economic perspectives.

Improved performance of self-reactivated Pt-ThO2/C catalysts in a direct ethanol fuel cell

Yubing Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel self-reactivated catalyst Pt-ThO2/C was prepared by using ThO2 as a catalytic additive to address the low activity and toxicity issues of Pt/C catalyst in direct ethanol fuel cell. The results showed that Pt-6.67 wt%ThO2/C exhibited superior catalytic activity and resistance to CO poisoning compared to Pt/C-NaBH4 in both electrochemical workstation and single-cell tests. It is speculated that the inclusion of ThO2 not only enhances the catalytic activity through the synergistic effect between Pt and Th, but also generates a large amount of OH radicals due to Th-232, which can oxidatively desorb CO from Pt-COads and solve the CO poisoning problem.

Enhancing bifunctional electrocatalysts of hollow Co3O4 nanorods with oxygen vacancies towards ORR and OER for Li-O2 batteries

Chanikarn Tomon et al.

Summary: The Co3O4 catalyst with high oxygen vacancy and narrow band gap promotes superior stability in OER and ORR compared to RuO2 and Pt/C catalysts. The relative current decay for OER and ORR is only 7% and 14% for the Co3O4 catalyst, while RuO2 and Pt/C catalysts show larger decreases in stability.

Oxygen ion conductivity studies of bismuth and bismuth-calcium co-doped ThO2

Aanchal Sethi et al.

Summary: Trivalent (Bi3+) doped and divalent (Ca2+) co-doped ThO2 samples were synthesized and studied for oxygen ion conductivity and dielectric relaxation phenomena. The optical band gap decreased with increasing Ca2+ concentration, while the Raman spectra showed increased intensity of defect bands due to oxygen vacancies from divalent addition. The highest oxide ion conductivity was observed for Bi3+ doped (50 mol %) and Bi3+ (50 mol %)-Ca2+ (10 mol %) co-doped ThO2 samples.

Rich Surface Oxygen Vacancies of MnO2 for Enhancing Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Qian Zhuang et al.

Summary: The efficient development of Mn-based electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxygen reactions through thermal treatment under hydrogen atmosphere has been proven effective in creating surface oxygen vacancies and enhancing catalytic activity for both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. The presence of oxygen vacancies modulates the intrinsic activity of MnO2 and improves their kinetics, resulting in superior catalytic performance.

Defect engineering in trivalent ion doped ceria through vanadium assisted charge compensation: insight using photoluminescence, positron annihilation and electron spin resonance spectroscopy

Debarati Das et al.

Summary: Pair matching charge compensation with trivalent and pentavalent dopants in ceria is an attractive strategy for enhancing catalytic properties with minimal lattice distortions. Studies on charge compensation with a vanadium codopant in trivalent ion doped ceria show that dopant and co-dopant choices are influenced by their ionic radius, with significant impact on vacancy concentrations and lattice distortions. This research is expected to aid in tuning vacancy concentrations and controlling lattice distortions for various technological applications.
