An effective stress-dependent dual-fractal permeability model for coal considering multiple flow mechanisms

Jianwei Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual-fractal permeability model was proposed to investigate the impacts of coal internal structure on permeability. The model considers the effects of pore-fracture size distribution and effective stress, and incorporates multiple flow mechanisms.

Towards prediction of oil recovery by spontaneous imbibition of modified salinity brine into limestone rocks: A scaling study

Seyed Mojtaba Bassir et al.

Summary: This research proposes a new empirical scaling equation to predict oil recovery by modified salinity imbibing brines in limestone rocks. By considering two critical aspects and analyzing test data from various limestone samples, the equation is more realistic and applicable to reservoir conditions.

Multiple upscaling procedures for gas transfer in tight shale matrix-fracture systems

Hong Zuo et al.

Summary: The study investigates multiple upscaling schemes for gas transfer in different scales of porous media, including nanoporous media, microporous matrix, core-scale matrix, and centimeter-scale matrix-fracture systems. A parallelized multi-scale numerical solver is developed to simulate micro-gaseous flow in composite microporous media using the pore-scale multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) and representative elementary volume (REV)-scale LBM model. The study also examines the variations of permeability with the spatial distribution of different constituents in tight shale formations and reveals new insights on gas transfer processes in these formations.

Practical turbidite interpretation: The role of relative confinement in understanding reservoir architectures

David 'Stan' Stanbrook et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the concept of the relative confinement matrix to aid non-specialist geologists in interpreting depositional architectures in deep-water clastic reservoir systems, thus providing crucial forecasts of performance and productivity. By analyzing parameters such as turbidity current size, conduit size, and relative confinement, predictive interpretations can inform exploration and development strategies for heterogeneous reservoirs.

Inertial Effect on Oil/Water Countercurrent Imbibition in Porous Media from a Pore-Scale Perspective

Zhilin Cheng et al.

Summary: The color-gradient lattice Boltzmann method was used to study the inertial effect on oil/water countercurrent imbibition characteristics. The results showed that fluid inertia only affects the local fluid behaviors and the imbibition oil recovery when the viscosity ratio is low, while it can be neglected when the viscosity ratio is high. These findings have important implications for energy-related and environmental applications.
