Effect of natural zeolite on water distribution and migration in low water/binder cement-based composites (LW/B-CC) mixed with seawater: An experimental and computational investigation

Rui Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of water distribution and migration in low water/binder cement-based composites (LW/B-CC) mixed with seawater and natural zeolite using experimental and numerical methods. The experiments show that porous zeolite alleviates the self-desiccation of LW/B-CC matrix, especially in seawater-mixed LW/B-CC, and the use of seawater improves the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between zeolite and matrix. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that ions in seawater are confined by the lattice of zeolite, blocking the transportation of water molecules.

Effects of incorporating silica glass powder as a supplementary cementitious material on selected properties of portland cement mortar

Zine el-Abidine Kameche et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the use of high-silica glass powder as a partial replacement for cement in mortar. The results show that incorporating the glass powder improves the mechanical strength and durability properties of the mortar, especially in the long-term.

Use of Natural Zeolite and Glass Powder Mixture as Partial Replacement of Portland Cement: The Effect on Hydration, Properties and Porosity

Dalius Kriptavicius et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of an additive consisting of natural zeolite and soda lime glass powder on the hydration, mechanical properties, and porosity of Portland cement concrete. The results show that adding zeolite and glass powder in certain proportions can improve the mechanical properties and reduce the porosity of the cement concrete.

Al uptake in calcium silicate hydrate and the effect of alkali hydroxide

Y. Yan et al.

Summary: The effect of Al and pH on the structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) was studied. The presence of Al led to changes in the secondary phases, interlayer distances, silicate chains, and concentrations of dissolved Al and Si. pH values also affected the structure, with different secondary phases dominating at low and high pH values.

Experimental investigation of pozzolanic reaction and curing temperature-dependence of low-calcium fly ash in cement system and Ca-Si-Al element distribution of fly ash-blended cement paste

Tiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pozzolanic reaction and curing temperature-dependence of low-calcium fly ash in cement systems over 2 years. It was found that fly ashes have different reactivities and temperature dependencies even though they have similar material properties. The Al/Si ratio of the C-(A)-S-H gel in fly ash-blended cement paste increases as the Ca/Si ratio decreases.

The past and future of sustainable concrete: A critical review and new strategies on cement-based materials

Jorge de Brito et al.

Summary: The negative impacts of cement-based material production are larger than expected, and there is a need for more scientific research to explore sustainable paths, particularly in the lifecycle of concrete. Various sustainability paths for concrete production have been identified, including mix composition, materials manufacturing, concrete mixing, on-site application, and in-service performance, which require further exploration and analysis to open up new possibilities for green concrete.

The Rapid Chloride Migration Test in Assessing the Chloride Penetration Resistance of Normal and Lightweight Concrete

Jorge Pontes et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effectiveness of the rapid chloride migration test (RCMT) in assessing the chloride penetration resistance of common concrete. The RCMT showed reasonable correlation with diffusion tests, but poorer correlation under wetting-drying conditions. However, RCMT was still able to classify concrete based on chloride penetration resistance regardless of aggregate type or water/binder ratio.
