Accelerating autonomic healing of cementitious composites by using nano calcium carbonate coated polypropylene fibers

Jianhang Feng et al.

Summary: A new strategy of fiber modification for enhancing self-healing of concrete is proposed in this study, which involves coating polypropylene fibers with nano calcium carbonate and ethyl cellulose film. The modified fibers accelerate healing product generations by promoting hydration and calcium carbonate precipitation. The closure of 300-500 µm wide cracks is enhanced, leading to 100% recovery of water tightness.

Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors as Novel Antibacterials in the Era of Antibiotic Resistance: Where Are We Now?

Alessio Nocentini et al.

Summary: Resistance to antibiotic treatment occurs when microorganisms resist clinically approved antibiotics. Medication repurposing/repositioning is a strategy that can help find new antibiotics. Among them, Zn2+ ion binders, such as sulfonamides and their bioisosteres, are considered promising compounds for obtaining novel antibacterials.

The mechanical properties improvement of environmentally friendly fly ash-based geopolymer mortar using bio-mineralization

Zhifeng Tian et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the feasibility of using microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) as a bonder to produce fly ash-based geopolymer mortar in place of cement. The results show that MICP significantly improves the strength and reduces water absorption of the mortar. However, excessive chemical solution concentration weakens the strength. In addition, the study demonstrates that MICP plays a crucial role in strength improvement of geopolymer mortar.

Application potential of Bacillus megaterium encapsulated by low alkaline sulphoaluminate cement in self-healing concrete

Yilin Su et al.

Summary: Microbial self-healing concrete, developed with the help of microbial mineralization for accelerated carbonate deposition, shows promising environmental benefits. However, proper assembly of microorganisms and nutrients to reduce negative impact on concrete performance remains a challenge. The use of Bacillus megaterium, nutrients, and low-alkaline carriers assembled by extrusion has significantly improved self-healing efficiency, with low alkali calcium sulphoaluminate (CSA) cement proving to be an excellent carrier for spores and reducing negative impacts on concrete.

Effect of microbes addition on the properties and surface morphology of fly ash - based geopolymer paste

Kiki Dwi Wulandari et al.

Summary: The addition of Rhizopus oligosporus and Sporosarcina pasteurii can significantly improve the compressive strength of fly ash-based geopolymer paste mixtures, while also increasing the closed porosity. On the other hand, adding a foaming agent and bottom ash had a negative impact on the inoculated microbes.

Influence of Bacterial Strain Combination in Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete subjected to Heavy and Very Heavy Traffic Condition

Chithambar Ganesh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of bacterial and fiber combination on the properties of GGBS based geopolymer concrete for use as paver blocks, showing that hybrid fiber reinforced bacterial geopolymer concrete has improved energy absorption and post cracking behavior. The research also explores the influence of bacterial strain combination on the self-healing of concrete. The findings suggest that the combination of bacteria and fibers enhances the mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete, making it suitable for heavy traffic conditions.
