Partial replacement of OPC with CSA cements - effects on hydration, fresh and hardened properties

Ankit Kothari et al.

Summary: The effects of replacing OPC with three types of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements were studied, showing that the inclusion of CSA in concrete can decrease setting times and increase maximal hydration temperature. The addition of anhydrite and calcium oxide can delay the formation of the second temperature peak and promote the synthesis of ettringite, C-S-H, and portlandite. However, excessive amounts can slow down reactions and lead to insufficient expansion or compensation for shrinkage.

Blending eco-efficient calcium sulfoaluminate belite ferrite cement to enhance the physico-mechanical properties of Portland cement paste cured in refrigerated and natural winter conditions

Ahmad Alzaza et al.

Summary: The acceleration impacts of calcium sulfoaluminate belite ferrite (CSABF)-a cement produced from industrial side streams-on the hydration and strength development of Portland cement (PC) paste cured at -5 degrees C were investigated. The addition of an optimal CSABF cement content increased the compressive strength of the paste by 500% under subzero curing conditions. Outdoor-curing and longer curing periods further enhanced the strength development of CSABF paste.

Effects of sodium nitrate and OPC-GGBS concrete mix composition on phase transition of pore water at subzero temperatures

Ankit Kothari et al.

Summary: This study focused on the effect of adding sodium nitrate antifreeze on the freezing point of mixing water for concrete at subzero temperatures. Results showed that adding 25 wt% of sodium nitrate effectively delayed ice growth, with the highest hydration rate and reduced porosity in the binder matrix. Additionally, applying temperatures above freezing point helped resume hydration process and increase strength, especially for mixes with lower amounts of formed ice.

Improved strength development and frost resistance of Portland cement ground-granulated blast furnace slag binary binder cured at 0 °C with the addition of calcium silicate hydrate seeds

Ahmad Alzaza et al.

Summary: Low ambient temperatures slow down the strength development of cementitious materials, but the addition of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) seeds can compensate for the strength loss caused by using ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and enhance the frost resistance of the binder.

Summary: The study reveals that the compressive strength of BFS-blended CSA cement with 30% BFS is comparable to that of pure CSA cement, and the main hydration products of BFS-blended CSA cement are identified as ettringite, monosulfate, Al(OH)(3), and stratlingite.

Summary: The study found that substituting OPC with CSA cement can improve the mechanical properties of concrete, but may increase the risk of carbonation and corrosion. Combining CSA cement with OPC and GGBS, however, can decrease the strength and durability of concrete.
