Light-modulated liquid crystal elastomer actuator with multimodal shape morphing and multifunction

Summary: Stimulus-responsive materials offer an attractive platform for designing soft robots that can dynamically change their shapes for various functions. In this study, a simple photomanipulation strategy was demonstrated to control the shape morphing of a soft millirobot made of an NIR-active liquid crystal elastomer. By programming the strain gradient in the elastomer using light stimuli, the millirobot was able to generate a wide range of morphing modes and exhibit multimodal locomotion behaviors. This reconfigurable material system has the potential to enable the development of intelligent soft robots with seamless integration of multimodal shape morphing and multifunctions.
