Understanding polymer nucleation by studying droplets crystallization in immiscible polymer blends

Seif Eddine Fenni et al.

Summary: This Feature Article discusses our recent research on the nucleation and crystallization of semi-crystalline polymeric droplets dispersed in immiscible matrices. The overall crystallization kinetics of the droplets can provide insights into the contributions of nucleation and growth. By defining the Turnbull number, we can determine the relative importance of nucleation versus growth. Examples are shown where the overall kinetics is dominated by crystal growth and examples where nucleation controls the crystallization. The strategic use of self-nucleation and the role of interfacial roughness and heterogeneous nucleating agents are also discussed. Overall, studying the kinetics of different droplet dispersions contributes to the fundamental understanding of polymer nucleation.

Ethylene Comonomer-Directed Epitaxial Nucleation and Growth of β-Nucleated Isotactic Polypropylene

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: We investigated the epitaxial crystallization of S-nucleated isotactic polypropylene with minor topographic modification at the interface caused by the inclusion of an ethylene comonomer. Experimental results showed that the amount of ethylene comonomer reduced the fraction of S-crystal (KS) due to the decreased S-nucleation ability and growth rate of the S-crystal. Molecular mechanics simulation revealed that the topographic modification weakened the intermolecular interactions, affecting the epitaxial nucleation and growth kinetics. This study provides insights into the control of polymorphism through the design of nucleation and growth interfaces.

Competing crystallization of α- and β-phase induced by β-nucleating agents in microdroplets of isotactic polypropylene

Enrico Carmeli et al.

Summary: A more quantitative method to study the efficiency of nucleating agents promoting polypropylene beta-phase is reported in this study. The findings show that the nucleating efficiency scale for alpha-phase is DCHT > TATA > QQ, while for beta-phase it is DCHT > QQ.

A path integral for the chiral-form partition function

E. Andriolo et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the partition function of the compact chiral boson on a two-dimensional torus using a path-integral formulation. By employing a Wick-rotation procedure obtained from a complex deformation of the physical spacetime metric, the expected result including general characteristics for the theta functions is directly reproduced. The study also extends to the chiral 2-form potential in six dimensions and its application in 4k+2 dimensions.

Crystallization of Polybutene-1 into Forms I′, II, and III Under High Pressure CO2: In situ Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, WAXD Mapping, and DSC Investigations

Ying Lu et al.

Summary: The crystallization behavior of polybutene-1 (PB-1) into different polymorphs under supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) was investigated. The results showed that form I' and form III nucleated and grew faster than form II under high CO2 pressures, suggesting competition between nucleation of different forms. The findings provide insights for controlling crystal polymorphism in PB-1 using supercritical fluid approach.

Self-Nucleation of β-Form Isotactic Polypropylene Lamellar Crystals in Thin Films

Binghua Wang et al.

Summary: The self-nucleation behavior of beta-form isotactic polypropylene crystals in ultrathin films was studied, revealing a decrease in nucleation density with increasing self-nucleation temperature and heating rate, and a faster growth of alpha-iPP compared to beta-iPP. The high-temperature beta alpha growth transition was found to be absent in this system, indicating a lower free energy barrier for secondary alpha alpha and beta beta nucleation in ultrathin films.

Fractionated crystallization in semicrystalline polymers

Leire Sangroniz et al.

Summary: This study investigates fractionated crystallization, where multiple separated crystallization events are observed in semicrystalline polymers when the number of microdomains is significantly higher than the available number of heterogeneities. The origins of fractionated crystallization effects and their impact on nucleation and crystallization kinetics are discussed.

The effect of β-nucleating agent on the self-nucleation of isotactic polypropylene

Yang Yue et al.

Summary: The effect of beta-nucleating agent on the self-nucleation of isotactic polypropylene was systematically investigated in this study. It was found that the presence of beta-NA increased the transition temperatures and narrowed the temperature width of the self-nucleation domain of iPP. The increased thermal stability of ordered structures in iPP containing beta-NA may be related to the beta-alpha transformation occurred upon heating.

Many-body thermodynamics on quantum computers via partition function zeros

Akhil Francis et al.

Summary: Partition functions play a crucial role in physics for determining thermodynamic properties and phase transitions of many-body systems. This study demonstrates a scalable approach for finding partition function zeros on quantum computers, showing a transition from XY-like behavior to Ising-like behavior with varying anisotropy. While quantum computers are not yet capable of reaching the thermodynamic limit, this work paves the way for future calculations of critical phenomena beyond classical computing limits.

Path-integral approach to the thermodynamics of bosons with memory: Partition function and specific heat

T. Ichmoukhamedov et al.

Summary: This passage discusses a system of bosons that interact through a class of general memory kernels, deriving a recurrence relation for the partition function within the path-integral formalism. It offers a generalization to known treatments of harmonically coupled systems of identical particles and applies the result to calculate the specific heat of a simplified model involving bosons harmonically coupled to a reservoir of distinguishable fictitious masses.

Concentration Effect of a Bis-amide Nucleating Agent on the Shear-Induced Crystallization Behavior of Isotactic Polypropylene

Yang Yue et al.

Summary: The concentration of nucleating agent DCHT significantly influences the crystallization behavior of iPP, with lower concentrations leading to increased Tc after shearing and decreased Tc after relaxation, while higher concentrations show minimal changes in Tc. Various forms of DCHT and their assembly play a crucial role in the shear-induced crystallization process of iPP.
