Fayez U. Ahmed et al.

Summary: Water resources have been affected by modern industry and oil spills, prompting the development of advanced technology and materials for oily wastewater treatment. In this study, a TiO2-decorated PVDF membrane was created using a hydrothermal approach. The resulting membrane exhibited excellent surface wettability, photo-catalytic degradability, and robustness, allowing for efficient separation of water-in-oil mixtures and water-in-oil emulsions. Furthermore, the photocatalytic nature of the TiO2 enabled the membrane to degrade pharmaceutical and organic pollutants. This technique has the potential to encourage the development of multifunctional superwetting materials for complex oily wastewater treatment.

Upcycling Waste Pine nut Shell Membrane for Highly Efficient Separation of Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion

Haoyu Li et al.

Summary: The discharge of oily sewage and frequent oil spills have caused serious harm to human production, life, and the ecological environment. The presence of surfactants in water makes oil-water mixtures form oil-in-water emulsions which are difficult to separate using traditional methods. The oily wastewater containing water-soluble pollutants like dyes and heavy metal ions also poses great harm to human health and the environment. A cost-efficient and environmentally friendly underwater superoleophobic pine nut shell membrane (PNSM) was prepared, which allows the separation of oil-in-water emulsion and adsorption of dyes and heavy metal ions. The PNSM also showed excellent toughness and flexibility, making it a promising candidate for multifunctional oily water remediation.

Aggregation-induced demulsification triggered by the hydrophilic fabric for the separation of highly emulsified oil droplets from water

Yu-Rong Zhang et al.

Summary: A functional fabric was developed with basalt fiber fabric as the substrate and polyvinyl alcohol as the coating, aimed at separating highly emulsified oil in water in a low cost and high-performance way. The coating served as a hydrophilic gate for water penetration in the emulsion, while the micro-channels in the fabric provided capillary force for continuous water flow. The synergy of these materials led to increased oil concentration in the liquid, promoting the aggregation of emulsified oil droplets and subsequent separation from water.

A durable superwetting clusters-inlayed mesh with high efficiency and flux for emulsion separation

Jihao Zuo et al.

Summary: The superwetting copper mesh, embedded with PDA/PEI@CNTs-NH2 clusters, demonstrated high separation efficiency and flux for anionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions, achieving over 99.5% separation efficiency and a flux as high as 3946.3 L m(2) h(-1) driven solely by gravity. The mesh's strong demulsification ability and high permeation flux are attributed to the charge-screening effect of-NH3+ and size sieving effect of optimized pore size, making it promising for sustainable separation of highly stabilized oil/water emulsions.
