Flexible phase change films with enhanced thermal conductivity and low electrical conductivity for thermal management

Yuang Zhang et al.

Summary: With the continuous miniaturization and integration of electronic devices, more advanced thermal management technology and materials are needed to solve the thermal failure problem. Phase change materials (PCMs) show great potential in electronic thermal management due to their excellent temperature control properties. However, achieving high heat transfer performance and flexibility while maintaining low electrical conductivity in PCMs remains a challenge. In this study, alkylated modified carbon nanotubes (mCNTs) were designed into the phase change polyurethane (PCPU) system. The incorporation of mCNTs resulted in enhanced thermal conductivity and high electrical resistance in PCPU. The PCPU/mCNTs films hold great potential for electronic thermal management.

An innovative modified calcium chloride hexahydrate-based composite phase change material for thermal energy storage and indoor temperature regulation

Ziheng Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified calcium chloride hexahydrate (CaCl2 center dot 6H(2)O) phase change material (PCM) was prepared with potassium chloride (KCl) as the temperature regulator and strontium hydroxide octahydrate (Sr(OH)(2)center dot 8H(2)O) as the nucleating agent. A shape-stabilized composite PCM suitable for space thermal regulation was prepared by immersing 15 wt% expanded graphite (EG) into 85 wt% modified PCM, with a phase transition temperature of 26.25 degrees C, phase change enthalpy of 153.03 J/g, and a thermal conductivity of 4.3893 W/(mK). The composite PCM showed little change in phase change temperature and only 5.95% loss in enthalpy after 500 heating-cooling cycles. The temperature regulation performance of the composite PCM was evaluated in a test chamber prepared with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) board, maintaining indoor temperature at 24.5-27.5 degrees C for 180 to 652 minutes. This prepared composite PCM can be applied effectively in temperature management of buildings.
