Effect of PLA/TiO2/Lg filler competition and synergy on crystallization behavior, mechanics and functionality of composite foaming materials

Tong Song et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a method for preparing high expansion ratio, high cell density PLA foams by combining titanium dioxide (TiO2) and lignin (Lg). TiO2 acts as a rigid core to generate heterogeneous nucleated crystals and increase the strength of the PLA matrix, while Lg functions as a polymer plasticizer with good dispersibility to improve the mobility of PLA molecular chains and reduce entanglement. The competition and synergy between the two nucleating agents were studied, and Lg exhibited a significant nucleation-promoting effect compared to TiO2 as a single nucleating agent. Additionally, the 1 wt% PLA/Lg composite foams prepared in this study showed excellent foaming properties.

Deep Eutectic Solvent-Extracted Lignin as an Efficient Additive for Entirely Biobased Polylactic Acid Composites

Saurabh Pawale et al.

Summary: This study reports the fabrication and characterization of entirely biobased composites made with polylactic acid (PLA) and deep eutectic solvent (DES)-extracted lignin. The results reveal that PLA/DES lignin biocomposites outperform their PLA/CAL counterparts in terms of morphology, thermal properties, and mechanical properties. SEM results show better lignin dispersion and smaller lignin agglomerates in PLA/DES lignin composites compared to PLA/CAL composites. TGA and DSC analysis reveal that DES lignin has a smaller effect on the thermal properties of PLA compared to CAL lignin. Tensile testing shows that PLA/DES lignin composites have significantly higher tensile strength and elongation at break than PLA/CAL composites.
