Road to Total Knee Replacement: Utilization of Knee Surgeries Up to Ten Years Before Total Knee Replacement in England and Sweden

Summary: This study compared the prevalence and timing of knee surgery in the 10 years prior to primary total knee replacement (TKR) between England and Sweden. The study found that meniscal surgeries were the most frequent procedure before TKR in both countries, and the prevalence increased in the years approaching TKR. In England, there was a decrease in the utilization of this procedure in the 4 years preceding TKR.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between within-person changes in patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) and the wish for joint surgery during participation in a digital first-line intervention for knee/hip osteoarthritis. The results showed that improvements in PROMs were associated with a reduced wish for surgery, while worsenings were associated with an increased wish for surgery.

This evidence-to-practice gap may lead to non-evidence based practices in the management of patients with osteoarthritis.
