Road to Total Knee Replacement: Utilization of Knee Surgeries Up to Ten Years Before Total Knee Replacement in England and Sweden

Andrea Dell'Isola et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence and timing of knee surgery in the 10 years prior to primary total knee replacement (TKR) between England and Sweden. The study found that meniscal surgeries were the most frequent procedure before TKR in both countries, and the prevalence increased in the years approaching TKR. In England, there was a decrease in the utilization of this procedure in the 4 years preceding TKR.

Within-person change in patient-reported outcomes and their association with the wish to undergo joint surgery during a digital first-line intervention for osteoarthritis

Andrea Dell'Isola et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between within-person changes in patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) and the wish for joint surgery during participation in a digital first-line intervention for knee/hip osteoarthritis. The results showed that improvements in PROMs were associated with a reduced wish for surgery, while worsenings were associated with an increased wish for surgery.

Patient appropriateness for total knee arthroplasty and predicted probability of a good outcome

Gillian A. Hawker et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the discriminant ability of preoperative measures of TKA need, readiness/willingness, and expectations, in order to improve the outcomes of TKA surgery. The study found that incorporating patients' readiness, willingness, and expectations can enhance the success rate of the surgery.

Giving an account of patients' experience: A qualitative study on the care process of hip and knee osteoarthritis

Simone Battista et al.

Summary: This study investigates how patients with osteoarthritis experience their disease and care process. The results reveal that a lack of medical evidence, communication difficulties, and negative attitudes towards treatment are major factors contributing to suboptimal care quality. The importance of providing patients with adequate information and improving care interventions is emphasized.

Opioid use prior to total knee replacement: comparative analysis of trends in England and Sweden

D. Yu et al.

Summary: Temporal prevalence patterns of opioid prescribing between cases and controls are similar in England and Sweden. Opioids are still commonly used in TKR cases in both countries highlighting the lack of valid alternatives for OA pain management.

Willingness to Undergo Joint Surgery Following a First-Line Intervention for Osteoarthritis: Data From the Better Management of People With Osteoarthritis Register

Andrea Dell'Isola et al.

Summary: The study found that willingness to undergo surgery decreased after a first-line intervention for OA, especially among patients with knee OA. High pain intensity, walking difficulties, and fear of movement were associated with willingness to undergo surgery, while increased self-efficacy showed the opposite trend.

Italian physiotherapists' knowledge of and adherence to osteoarthritis clinical practice guidelines: a cross-sectional study

Simone Battista et al.

Summary: Implementation of clinical practice guidelines for managing musculoskeletal conditions among physiotherapists may not be optimal, especially in the context of osteoarthritis. While physiotherapists show adequate knowledge on the importance of exercise and education in these guidelines, there is still a gap in adherence, particularly in areas such as weight reduction and advising rest over physical activity. This evidence-to-practice gap may lead to non-evidence based practices in the management of patients with osteoarthritis.
