Mixed matrix composite PEM with super proton conductivity developed from ionic liquid modified silica nanoparticle and polybenzimidazole

Akhil Gorre et al.

Summary: In order to develop proton exchange membranes (PEM), the issues of phosphoric acid (PA) leaching, low proton conductivity and weak mechanical strength of polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes need to be significantly improved. This study addresses these issues by preparing a mixed matrix composite (MMC) membrane consisting of oxy-polybenzimidazole (OPBI) and imidazole ionic liquid modified silica (ImILSi). The uniform dispersion of ImILSi in the OPBI matrix and the strong H-bonded interfacial interactions between nanofillers and polymers contribute to the significant improvement of various physical properties of the MMC. The MMC membranes exhibit enhanced thermal and mechanical properties, as well as superior proton conduction under anhydrous environment and elevated temperature.

Poly(N-vinyl triazole-b-N-vinyl imidazole) Grafted on MWCNTs as Nanofillers to Improve Proton Conducting Membranes

Nilanjan Mukherjee et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple and efficient method was developed to functionalize the surface of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with precise functional polymer chains, which were covalently grafted on the surface of the MWCNT. These polymer-grafted MWCNTs were then used as nanofillers in developing proton conducting membranes with enhanced properties. The novelty of this work lies in successfully grafting a same N-heterocyclic block copolymer structure covalently on the surface of the MWCNT.

Polymer-Grafted Graphene Oxide/Polybenzimidazole Nanocomposites for Efficient Proton-Conducting Membranes

Anupam Das et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized by growing polymer chains on its surface to make a highly efficient nanocomposite-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) with oxypolybenzimidazole (OPBI). Three different types of polymer-g-GO, which were pAAM-g-GO, pAMPS-g-GO, and pSPAK-g-GO, were obtained by polymerizing different monomers on the activated GO surface. The effects of grafted polymer structure and chain length on nanocomposite PEM properties were studied. The nanocomposite PEM exhibited excellent thermal stability, improved tensile properties, increased proton conductivity, and superior phosphoric acid (PA) retention. When 2.5 wt% pSPAK-g-GO was mixed with OPBI, the resulting PEM showed significantly enhanced proton conductivity compared to the pristine OPBI membrane. This is the first report on the utilization of polymer-g-GO in polybenzimidazole membranes for high-temperature PEM application.

Design of Flexible Metal-Organic Framework-Based Superprotonic Conductors and Their Fabrication with a Polymer into Proton Exchange Membranes

Olivia Basu et al.

Summary: The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to develop efficient proton conductors has become popular in sustainable energy research due to their tunable structure and function. In this study, flexible MOF-based proton conductors were created using postsynthetic modification (PSM) on Fe-MIL-53-NH2 and FeMIL-88B-NH2 MOFs. The modified MOFs showed significantly increased proton conductivity compared to their parent MOFs. To make them practical for proton conduction, the modified MOFs were incorporated as fillers into a polymer matrix, resulting in flexible proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with improved efficiency and stability.

Surface initiated RAFT polymerization to synthesize N-heterocyclic block copolymer grafted silica nanofillers for improving PEM properties

Nilanjan Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The development of block copolymer grafted SiNP as functional nanofiller for nanocomposites-based PEM showed promising results in improving thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities, as well as proton conductivity. The structure, sequence, and length of polymer chains on SiNP surface were found to significantly influence the properties of the nanofiller and ultimately alter the PEM properties. The clear dependence of PEM properties on the architecture of BC-g-SiNP highlights the importance of understanding the impact of chain length and sequence on nanofiller performance.
