Platinum nanosheets synthesized via topotactic reduction of single-layer platinum oxide nanosheets for electrocatalysis

Daisuke Takimoto et al.

Summary: We synthesized double-layer Pt nanosheets with a thickness of 0.5 nm by reducing single-layer PtOx nanosheets exfoliated from layered platinic acid. The ORR activity of these Pt nanosheets is twice that of conventionally used 3 nm-sized Pt nanoparticles due to their large electrochemically active surface area (124 m(2) g(-1)). These Pt nanosheets show great potential in reducing Pt usage by enhancing ORR activity and offer strategies for designing advanced catalysts superior to traditional nanoparticle systems in fuel cells, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and fine chemical production.

Engineering a Local Free Water Enriched Microenvironment for Surpassing Platinum Hydrogen Evolution Activity

Qunlei Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a method of manipulating the catalyst-electrolyte interface to enhance alkaline hydrogen evolution activity by introducing local force fields through surface hydroxyl groups. We show that the local hydrogen bond induced by the surface hydroxyl group can drag H2O molecules across the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP) to continuously supply reactants to catalytic sites. Additionally, the hydroxyl group coupled with the Ni/Ni3C heterostructure lowers the water dissociation energy by polarization effects. As a result, hydroxyl-rich catalysts exhibit higher activity than Pt/C at high current density in alkaline medium.
