Effective electronic tuning of Pt single atoms via heterogeneous atomic coordination of (Co,Ni)(OH)2 for efficient hydrogen evolution

An Pei et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel Pt-1/(Co,Ni)(OH)(2)/C single-atom catalyst (SAC) that exhibits superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity compared to other catalysts. Notably, this catalyst shows almost zero onset overpotential and high electrocatalytic mass activity for HER. Operando Raman spectra and DFT calculations confirm the electronic synergy between Pt single atoms and bimetallic (Co,Ni)(OH)(2), which contributes to the enhanced catalytic performance.

Design of modified MOFs electrocatalysts for water splitting: High current density operation and long-term stability

Yangping Zhang et al.

Summary: This review emphasizes the importance of developing efficient catalysts for high performance water splitting under high-current-density operation and long-term stability. However, most reported modified MOFs catalysts have shown favorable catalytic activity under low current density (10 mA cm-2) and limited stability. Therefore, it is essential yet challenging to design and apply modified MOFs catalysts with high current density and prolonged stability. We first classify the modified MOFs into pristine MOFs, MOFs composites, and MOFs derivatives. Then, we discuss strategies for improving high-current-density activity, such as electronic structure tuning, defect construction, and vacancy formation, as well as methods for enhancing long-term stability, including active sites protection, catalytic support reinforcement, and efficient surface reconstruction. Finally, we propose the challenges and prospects of modified MOFs for industrial water splitting and provide design principles for modified MOFs materials.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.
