A review of carbon fiber surface modification methods for tailor-made bond behavior with cementitious matrices

Huanyu Li et al.

Summary: Insufficient bonding between hydrophobic carbon fibers and water-based suspensions has limited the application of carbon fiber reinforced cements and other mineral building materials. Researchers have explored physical and chemical modification methods to enhance load transfer from mineral matrices to carbon fibers. Polymer impregnations and temperature-stable mineral suspensions have been used to improve the interface between carbon fibers and matrices, achieving better pullout behavior. Surface modification techniques such as oxidation and electrophoretic deposition have also been employed to improve fiber-matrix interactions. This article systematically reviews and compares these approaches, providing recommendations for achieving tailor-made interfacial bonding behavior.

3D Off-Lattice Coarse-Grained Monte Carlo Simulations for Nucleation of Alkaline Aluminosilicate Gels

Mohammadreza Izadifar et al.

Summary: This study presents a 3D off-lattice coarse-grained Monte Carlo (CGMC) approach to simulate the nucleation, particle size, and pore size distribution of alkaline aluminosilicate gels. The model extends the previous on-lattice approach by implementing tetrahedral geometrical constraints in the aggregation process. The obtained nanostructure was compared with on-lattice CGMC and measurement results, highlighting the importance of the developed off-lattice CGMC approach.

Article Silicate Dissolution Mechanism from Metakaolinite Using Density Functional Theory

Mohammadreza Izadifar et al.

Summary: In this study, a method was proposed to compute the activation energies required for the dissolution of metakaolin (MK) at far-from-equilibrium conditions using the improved dimer method and the transition-state theory within density functional theory. The results showed that the activation energy for breaking the oxo-bridging bond between silicate or aluminate units is higher for the former due to the ionic interaction. However, a higher activation energy is required for breaking the oxo-bridging bond to the aluminate neighbor compared to the silicate neighbor for complete silicate tetrahedra dissolution. These findings can provide missing input data for predicting the mesoscopic dissolution rate using the atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo upscaling approach.

The addition of low-cost few layers graphene (FLG) to improve flexural strength of coal fly ash based- geopolymer

Amun Amri et al.

Summary: The flexural strength of geopolymer can be improved by adding few layers graphene (FLG). The composites were made by mixing coal fly ash, alkaline activator, fine aggregate, and FLG. Various characterization methods were used to analyze the flexural strength and morphological properties of the composites, and the interaction between the geopolymer matrix and FLG was also investigated. The results showed that the addition of FLG increased the flexural strength of the composites, and FLG was distributed and embedded in the matrix, forming secondary bonds that enhanced the composite. Furthermore, the geopolymer composite exhibited high flexural strength even after exposure to high temperature.

Structural, electronic, thermal and mechanical properties of C60-based fullerene two-dimensional networks explored by first-principles and machine learning

Bohayra Mortazavi

Summary: Recent experiments have demonstrated the realization of anisotropic and nanoporous 2D networks of C60-based fullerenes, which represent a significant advancement and exciting prospects for new nanomaterials. In this study, theoretical calculations were used to explore novel C60-based fullerene lattices and evaluate their stability and physical properties. The results showed the existence of novel 2D, 1D and porous carbon C60-based networks with similar energies to isolated C60 cages. Density functional theory results revealed their remarkable thermal stability and electronic nature, ranging from metallic, semimetallic to semiconducting. Machine learning interatomic potentials were employed to investigate the thermal and mechanical responses of the predicted nanoporous 2D lattices. The estimated thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the C60-based networks were found to be in good agreement with experimental measurements, demonstrating their superior performance.

Dissolution of β-C2S Cement Clinker: Part 2 Atomistic Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) Upscaling Approach

Mohammadreza Izadifar et al.

Summary: In this study, a fundamental atomistic computational approach was used to understand and quantify the mesoscopic forward dissolution rate of belite cement. The calculated activation energies were used to develop an atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo upscaling approach, which revealed the dissolution time and morphology changes at a larger scale. The findings showed that the dissolution rate of belite was limited by the slower dissolution of silicate monomers compared to calcium atoms. Introducing crystal defects increased the overall dissolution rate significantly.

Conductive Geopolymers as Low-Cost Electrode Materials for Microbial Fuel Cells

Shifan Zhang et al.

Summary: Geopolymer inorganic binders show superior acid resistance and microbial compatibility compared to conventional cement binders, and can incorporate electrically conductive additives to enhance electron and ion transfer properties. Composites with graphite content of 1-10 vol % were prepared and characterized, with the electrical conductivity percolation threshold being around 7-8 vol %. Anode electrodes in microbial fuel cells using GPG composites showed equal current production compared to conventional graphite anodes, while PCG composites performed poorly. The use of sustainable GPs as a low-cost electrode binder material in MFCs has the potential to reduce production costs and increase large-scale application feasibility.
