One-step preparation of a novel graphitic biochar/Cu0/Fe3O4 composite using CO2-ambiance pyrolysis to activate peroxydisulfate for dye

Yangfan Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel heterogonous catalyst FCBC was prepared through a one-step co-pyrolysis protocol, which demonstrated excellent efficiency in degrading organic pollutants by activating PDS. The catalyst showed structural defects, high surface area, and low electrical impedance, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species. The cascade reactions involving sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals, as well as non-radical pathways, contributed to the degradation of Rhodamine B.

Biochar co-doped with nitrogen and boron switching the free radical based peroxydisulfate activation into the electron-transfer dominated nonradical process

Jibo Dou et al.

Summary: In this study, N/B co-doped biochars were used as metal-free activators of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for tetracycline degradation, and the roles of dopants as well as the relative contribution of radical vs nonradical oxidations were comprehensively investigated. The findings demonstrated that co-doping N and B into biochars not only enhanced catalytic activity, but also shifted the PDS-activated process from radical to electron transfer-dominated nonradical pathway. The study provided new insights into the critical role of heteroatom-doped carbocatalysts in PDS nonradical activation.

Catalytic performance and periodate activation mechanism of anaerobic sewage sludge-derived biochar

Pengyu Xiao et al.

Summary: Biochar obtained from pyrolysis of anaerobic sewage sludge without pretreatment can be effectively used for PI activation, with the best activation achieved at 800 degrees C. The activation of PI is highly pH-dependent, showing the highest AO7 removal rate at pH 3.0. The SBC-800/PI system has demonstrated anti-interference capacity with common wastewater components and can be reused, with singlet oxygen production and electron transfer being the dominant AO7 oxidation mechanisms.

Coupling nitrogen/oxygen self-doped biomass porous carbon cathode catalyst with CuFeO2/biochar particle catalyst for the heterogeneous visible-light driven photo-electro-Fenton degradation of tetracycline

Shuaishuai Xin et al.

Summary: A heterogeneous visible-light driven photo-electro-Fenton system was developed using nitrogen/oxygen biomass self-doped porous carbon (NO/PC) cathode catalyst and CuFeO2/biochar particle catalyst to degrade tetracycline. By optimizing the CuFeO2/biochar loads, initial pH and current density, the energy consumption was reduced and tetracycline mineralization was promoted. The degradation pathway and Escherichia coli growth inhibition experiments showed that the catalytic degradation of the H-VL-PEF system alleviated the comprehensive toxicity of tetracycline.

Summary: Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for environmental pollution remediation. However, the utilization of harvested biomass poses challenges in practical applications. This study presents a novel approach using a manganese-carbon-based single-atom catalyst method to enhance the potential utilization of biomass for phytoremediation and demonstrates its high efficiency and stability in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes: Applications, mechanisms, and enhancing strategies

Biao Song et al.

Summary: This article reviews the recent studies on pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for wastewater treatment. Pyrite is a low-cost catalyst with the ability to release Fe2+ and self-regulate solution pH. Enhancements to pyrite-mediated AOPs can be achieved by converting pyrite into nanoparticles, using ultrasound and light irradiation, and adding exogenous substances. Future development directions include toxicity research, mechanism research, and technological coupling.

Carbon defects in biochar facilitated nitrogen doping: The significant role of pyridinic nitrogen in peroxymonosulfate activation and ciprofloxacin degradation

Shuai Qu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped biochar (NKBC800) was prepared by creating defective carbon in pinewood-derived biochar, resulting in larger specific surface area, higher defective degree, and more active N species. The NKBC800 exhibited excellent peroxymonosulfate activation ability and showed significantly higher removal efficiency for ciprofloxacin compared to the undoped biochar.

Insights into effects of ageing processes on Cd-adsorbed biochar stability and subsequent sorption performance

Fanqi Jing et al.

Summary: Conversion of agricultural biomass wastes into biochar has great potential to improve soil quality and sequester pollutants. However, the interaction between biochar and adsorbed pollutants is influenced by long-term ageing. This study found that ageing processes affected the stability of Cd-adsorbed biochar and altered its sorption capacity for DEP.

Cost comparison of advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment using accumulated oxygen-equivalent criteria

Emmanuel Mousset et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes have been widely studied for their effectiveness in removing biorefractory pollutants from wastewater. However, there is a lack of suitable methods to compare the performance of different AOPs. This paper proposes a novel criterion, the accumulated oxygen-equivalent chemical-oxidation dose (AOCD), to systematically compare diverse AOPs.

Nitrogen doping sludge-derived biochar to activate peroxymonosulfate for degradation of sulfamethoxazole: Modulation of degradation mechanism by calcination temperature

Shizong Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the surface property of biochar can be modified through nitrogen doping and calcination temperature, affecting the degradation mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Increasing calcination temperature led to a decrease in the contribution of free radicals to SMX degradation, while the contribution of surface-bound reactive species increased gradually. The study also showed that nitrogen-doped sludge-derived biochar (NSDB) had higher catalytic activity compared to sludge-derived biochar (SDB), indicating the potential of nitrogen doping to enhance the catalytic activity of biochar.
