Mangrove degradation retarded microplastics weathering and affected metabolic activities of microplastics-associated microbes

Hui Deng et al.

Summary: The weathering characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in mangrove sediments were compared between undegraded and degraded areas, and their potential interactions with microbially-driven functions were explored. After 70 days of incubation, significant erosion features were observed in both undegraded and degraded mangrove sediments. However, the weathering characteristics were more pronounced in the undegraded sediments. Mangrove degradation also affected the network complexity of MPs-associated microorganisms and their metabolic activities.

Microplastics: A major source of phthalate esters in aquatic environments

Yaru Cao et al.

Summary: Phthalate esters (PAEs), commonly used additives in plastics, have raised global concern due to their widespread contamination in aquatic environments. This study investigated the release behaviors of PAEs from different types of plastic products, finding that the leaching potentials were plastic type-specific. The highest concentrations of PAEs were released from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pencil case, while the lowest amounts were released from polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and shampoo bottle.

Transport and retention patterns of fragmental microplastics in saturated and unsaturated porous media: A real-time pore-scale visualization

Shunan Dong et al.

Summary: Researchers used a real-time pore-scale visualization system to study the transport and retention mechanisms of fragmental microplastics (FMPs) in porous media. They found that FMPs can move along with the bulk flow, as well as move around the sand surfaces via sliding, rolling, and saltating patterns. In saturated porous media, FMPs were mainly retained through deposition and straining. Surprisingly, little FMPs were captured by the air-water interface in unsaturated conditions. The mobility of FMPs varied with environmental factors, including solution ionic strength, grain size, and water content in porous media.

Summary: The pollution of small-sized microplastics (SMPs) in roadside soils in urban areas poses a potential risk to human health. The exposure to SMPs is greater in infants compared to adults, and polypropylene is the main pollutant. This study highlights the dominance and potential risk of SMPs in roadside soils.

Aggregation kinetics of fragmental PET nanoplastics in aqueous environment: Complex roles of electrolytes, pH and humic acid

Shunan Dong et al.

Summary: The aggregation kinetics of fragmental polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics in aqueous environment were studied under various chemistry conditions. It was found that the aggregation of PET nanoplastics increased with higher electrolyte concentrations and lower solution pH, especially in the presence of divalent cations. Additionally, the presence of humic acid was shown to significantly inhibit the aggregation of PET nanoplastics.

Cotransport and deposition of colloidal polystyrene microplastic particles and tetracycline in porous media: The impact of ionic strength and cationic types

Peng Zhao et al.

Summary: The co-transport behaviors of colloidal polystyrene microplastic particles (PSMPs) and tetracycline (TC) were found to be complex and influenced by ionic strengths in saturated porous media. The presence of TC affected the mobility of PSMPs differently in K+ and Ca2+ solutions, while the attachment efficiencies of both PSMPs and TC showed non-linear and non-monotonic changes with increases in ionic strength, particularly in CaCl2 solutions. The balance between transport-inhibiting and transport-facilitating effects, such as TC adsorption on PSMPs, played a critical role in the observed changes.

Transport characteristics of fragmental polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) microplastics in porous media under various chemical conditions

Shunan Dong et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the transport characteristics of fragmental PET microplastics in porous media through column experiments, showing that both environmental factors and basic properties play important roles in controlling the retention and transport of PET microplastics. The combined impact of electrolytes, pH, and humic acid on PET microplastic transport was also highlighted, with environmental conditions having a stronger effect on transport behaviors in porous media than experimental chemical conditions. Furthermore, numerical modeling was used to depict the retention and transport of PET microplastics in porous media, providing insights into the environmental fate and risk of microplastics in underground soil and water systems.
