Variation of wood color and chemical composition in the stem cross-section of oak (Quercus spp.) trees, with special attention to the sapwood-heartwood transition zone

Mohamed Traore et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transition zone in oak wood through color parameters and molecular structure analysis. The results show significant differences between the transition zone, sapwood, and heartwood in terms of color and chemical composition, which may be related to lignification and storage of polysaccharide compounds.

Differences of technological properties on sapwood and heartwood of short rotation teak wood

Resa Martha et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of sapwood and heartwood differences on technological properties of short rotation teak. The results showed that heartwood had higher extractive content compared to sapwood, with lapachol and 9,10-anthracenedione being the main compounds in heartwood and single sugars and derivatives in sapwood. The extractives in short rotation teak could improve various technological properties, such as dimensional stability, water-sorption, decay and termite resistance, and photostability. However, sapwood had lower quality and required certain treatments for outdoor applications.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Acacia mangium Lignin Isolated from Pulp Mill Byproduct for Potential Application in Wood Composites

Nissa Nurfajrin Solihat et al.

Summary: Efficient isolation and understanding of lignin properties are crucial for the effective valorization of lignin as a renewable feedstock for producing bio-based chemicals. This study successfully isolated lignin from black liquor using dilute acid precipitation and fractionation methods. The physical and chemical characteristics of the lignin were analyzed, revealing the effects of fractionation on lignin morphology. These findings have important implications for the industrial application of lignin in manufacturing improved wood-based composites.

Relation of Chemical Composition and Colour of Spruce Wood

Viera Kucerova et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the color variation of fresh cut spruce wood. Detailed color analysis was performed using spectrophotometric data and a color model was constructed. The amounts of color chromophores were found to be correlated with the chemical composition of the spruce wood, and the moisture content also affected the wood color.

Correlation of Studies between Colour, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Commercially Produced ThermoWood(R) Treated Norway Spruce and Scots Pine

Petteri Torniainen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the color, mechanical properties, and structural characterization of Norway spruce and Scots pine commercially modified by the ThermoWood(R) S and D processes. It found changes in color, hardness values, and mechanical properties after thermal modification, and demonstrated the potential to differentiate between different modification processes and untreated wood using color measurements, mechanical properties, and principal component analysis.

Prediction of Mechanical Properties of Artificially Weathered Wood by Color Change and Machine Learning

Vahid Nasir et al.

Summary: Color parameters were used to develop a machine learning model for predicting the mechanical properties of artificially weathered wood samples. The study found a correlation between color change and mechanical degradation in the samples. The predictive model estimated the MOE and MOR values with high accuracy, suggesting potential for studying larger timber samples in future research.
