Combining mineralisation and thermal modification to improve the fungal durability of selected wood species

Rozle Repic et al.

Summary: The development of non-biocidal and environmentally friendly wood protection systems is a high priority. In this study, the impact of an innovative modification procedure combining thermal modification and mineralization was evaluated. The results showed that the combination of thermal modification and mineralization had a significant effect on the durability of wood against different fungi.

Wood and the Activity of Dead Tissue

Michaela Eder et al.

Summary: Wood is a prototypical biological material that adapts to mechanical requirements, with its mechanical and actuation properties being determined by the microarchitecture of cellulose fibrils. The orientation of cellulose fibers can be seen as an analog code that influences wood's response to humidity as an active material. Examples of wood activity harvesting and bioinspiration are provided.

Wood forest resource consumption impact assessment based on a scarcity index accounting for wood functionality and substitutability (WoodSI)

Gabrielle Frankiewicz Odppes et al.

Summary: The study developed a characterization model to assess the potential impacts of loss of wood forest resource availability caused by consumption, considering consumption, resource renewability, current stock, and substitution capacity. Charcoal and wood pulp production were identified as wood functions with the highest potential shortage on a global scale, with some countries experiencing scarcity due to high consumption rates or small forest areas.

Potentials of silicate-based formulations for wood protection and improvement of mechanical properties: A review

Arnaud Maxime Cheumani Yona et al.

Summary: Silica or silica-precursor systems are used to protect wood against damages and improve fire resistance. Methods such as heat treatment and reactions with metal cation salts are used to convert silicate species into silica particles. Treated wood shows increased mechanical properties and resistance to degradation and fire.

Industrial Heat Treatment of Wood: Study of Induced Effects on Ayous Wood (Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum)

Emiliano Gennari et al.

Summary: The study found that high-temperature treatment of ayous wood can improve its adaptability to environmental moisture changes, but may reduce some of its physical and mechanical characteristics. This includes a decrease in compression strength, static bending, Brinell hardness, while enhancing the dimensional stability of the wood.

Improving the flame retardancy of wood using an eco-friendly mineralisation process

Andreja Pondelak et al.

Summary: A novel environmentally friendly method is presented for in situ formation of CaCO3 inside a wood's structure, using a one-component treatment medium and a single stage process to improve fire retardancy.

Mineral-based composition with deliquescent salt as flame retardant for melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF)-bonded wood composites

Tomasz Ozyhar et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the flame-retardant potential of a composition consisting of a surface-treated high-porosity calcium carbonate-based mineral and deliquescent calcium chloride. The composition showed the ability to absorb substantial amounts of water and exhibited significant flame-retardant effects in wood composites, although it negatively impacted internal bond strength. A weight percentage of 10-15 of the flame retardant was found to strike a good balance between flame retardancy and mechanical properties.
