Monkeypox

Oriol Mitja et al.

Summary: Monkeypox is a zoonotic illness caused by the monkeypox virus, mainly found in west and central Africa. In 2022, it became a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to its unprecedented global spread outside Africa. The disease primarily spreads through close intimate contact, with most cases diagnosed among men who have sex with men.

Mitigating Vaccine Hesitancy and Building Trust to Prevent Future Measles Outbreaks in England

Sarah Thompson et al.

Summary: Measles is a highly infectious respiratory viral infection that is preventable with the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) with a coverage of at least 95%. Vaccine hesitancy is a major factor contributing to measles outbreaks, including in England, and it is recognized as a global public health threat by the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite a significant reduction in measles incidence since 2012, sporadic outbreaks with geographic disparities and variations in MMR coverage still occur in England. MMR uptake has decreased across all regions over the past decade, and no area currently meets the WHO target of 95% coverage for both doses of MMR.

Knowledge and Attitudes of Turkish Physicians towards Human Monkeypox Disease and Related Vaccination: A Cross-Sectional Study

Taha Koray Sahin et al.

Summary: This study surveyed 283 physicians in Turkey about their knowledge, attitude, concerns, and vaccine acceptance for monkeypox. The results showed that 32.5% of the physicians had a good level of knowledge and 31.4% planned to have the monkeypox vaccine. Female physicians and older individuals were more likely to be knowledgeable about monkeypox. Physicians from internal medicine divisions, those who learned about monkeypox during medical school or residency, and those previously exposed to COVID-19 had a higher knowledge score of monkeypox. Physicians with a good knowledge score were more worried about monkeypox compared to COVID-19.

Understanding of Final Year Medical, Pharmacy and Nursing Students in Pakistan towards Antibiotic Use, Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship: Findings and Implications

Iqra Raees et al.

Summary: This study surveyed 1251 final year students from Pakistan’s medical, pharmacy, and nursing programs to evaluate their knowledge of antibiotic use, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and their readiness to implement antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). The majority of students had good knowledge of these topics, but were not fully prepared to participate in ASPs. There was a significant association between antibiotic knowledge and causes of AMR with sex, family income, student type, and university affiliation. The findings highlight the need for improved education and training on appropriate antibiotic use and ASPs for healthcare professionals in Pakistan.

Sophia Toya Kroeger et al.

Summary: The study aims to present a comprehensive overview based on the gathered data and illustrate the approach of the Cologne Health Department in containing the mpox outbreak in 2022. The outbreak primarily affected men who have sex with men, had a shorter average incubation period, and mucosal involvement and associated symptoms were observed in a relevant number of cases. Previous smallpox vaccination was found to be statistically significant in reducing the severity and duration of the disease.

Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among healthcare workers in Cameroon and Nigeria: a web-based cross-sectional study

Jerry Brown Aseneh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among healthcare workers in Cameroon and Nigeria. The study found that mistrust in the vaccine, lower perception of the vaccine's importance on personal health, concerns about vaccine-related adverse effects, and uncertainty about colleagues' vaccine acceptability were associated with higher vaccine hesitancy. On the other hand, participants with chronic diseases and higher levels of concerns about COVID-19 were less likely to be hesitant to receive the vaccine.

Knowledge and attitudes of health care workers about monkeypox virus infection in Southern Italy

Grazia Miraglia del Giudice et al.

Summary: This survey aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare workers in Italy regarding monkeypox virus infection. The results showed a lack of knowledge among the participants, with less than two-thirds able to define the disease and provide correct transmission mechanisms. Only a small percentage recognized healthcare workers and vulnerable populations as high-risk groups. Strategic training programs are needed to improve knowledge acquisition. The survey also revealed positive attitudes among approximately half of the respondents, but the level of concern about contracting monkeypox was relatively low.

Safety of Monkeypox Vaccine Using Active Surveillance, Two-Center Observational Study in Italy

Marco Montalti et al.

Summary: In August 2022, Italy launched a vaccination campaign targeting the spread of monkeypox virus, prioritizing laboratory personnel and men who have sex with men. The study conducted in Bologna and Forlì involved participant-based active surveillance to investigate adverse events following immunization (AEFIs). The findings suggest that the monkeypox vaccine has a high tolerance for short-term systemic AEFIs, but warns about the high incidence and severity of local AEFIs which need to be monitored following intradermal administration of the vaccine.

This suggests a high prevalence of empirical antimicrobial use among hospitalized children in Pakistan, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

Monkeypox: A Comprehensive Review

Harapan Harapan et al.

Summary: The multi-country monkeypox outbreak in humans in 2022 has added a new public health challenge on top of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The disease has spread to 104 countries across six continents, with North America and Europe being the most affected. The monkeypox virus (MPXV) has been known since 1959 and has been reported to be virulent among humans since the 1970s, primarily in endemic countries in West and Central Africa. However, the disease has re-emerged at an unprecedented rate in 2022, raising concerns about its human-to-human transmission and community spread in non-endemic regions. It is crucial for healthcare workers, public health policymakers, and the general public to be well-informed about this neglected viral disease. This comprehensive overview provides information on the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of monkeypox. It also discusses preventive and control measures, the latest vaccine developments, and future research areas for this re-emerging viral disease that has been declared a public health emergency of international concern.

The results showed a lack of knowledge about HMPX among healthcare workers and low confidence in diagnosing and managing the disease. Additionally, some healthcare workers held beliefs linking the spread of the disease to male homosexuals. These findings highlight the urgent need to raise awareness about the disease and take appropriate measures to prevent stigma and discrimination among at-risk groups.
