Comparison of Stroke Care Costs in Urban and Nonurban Hospitals and Its Association With Outcomes in New Zealand: A Nationwide Economic Evaluation

Joosup Kim et al.

Summary: This study compared the costs and quality-adjusted life years of stroke patients admitted to urban and nonurban hospitals in New Zealand. The results showed that urban hospitals had higher treatment costs and quality-adjusted life years compared to nonurban hospitals, even after adjustment for other factors. These findings can help improve the level of treatment in nonurban hospitals and optimize outcomes for patients.

Estimation of the economic burden of atrial fibrillation-related stroke in Greece

Konstantinos Vemmos et al.

Summary: This study estimated the total annual socioeconomic burden of AF-related stroke in Greece at 175 million euros in 2018. Major cost contributors included informal care, patient productivity losses, and hospitalizations. The results suggest that reallocating resources efficiently could reduce the burden of AF-related stroke and improve healthcare system efficiency.

Cost-Effectiveness of Mobile Stroke Unit Care in Norway

Ulrikke Hojslev Lund et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the cost-effectiveness of mobile stroke units (MSUs) compared with conventional care in Norwegian settings. The results suggest that MSU care may be cost-effective, but it depends on treating a relatively high number of acute ischemic stroke patients per vehicle annually.

New View on the Canadian Burden of Stroke: Productivity Loss in Adults Who Return to Work

Theodore Wein et al.

Summary: This study reveals that returning to work after a stroke can result in productivity loss and significant indirect costs, yet a considerable number of stroke survivors still choose to go back to work, possibly driven by lack of significant disability or socioeconomic factors.

Comparison between Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Strokes in Functional Outcome at Discharge from an Intensive Rehabilitation Hospital

Emilia Salvadori et al.

Summary: Comparison studies on recovery outcomes in ischemic (IS) and hemorrhagic strokes (HS) have shown mixed results. In a retrospective observational study, it was found that HS patients were younger and had more severe clinical deficits compared to IS patients. However, functional status change at discharge did not significantly differ between the two stroke types, with age and initial stroke severity being main prognostic factors.

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Valery L. Feigin et al.

Summary: Regularly updated data on stroke including incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and trends are crucial for evidence-based care planning. The Global Burden of Diseases Study provides comprehensive measurement of these metrics. From 1990 to 2019, while age-standardized rates improved, the number of strokes and deaths increased. Low-income countries had the highest stroke-related mortality and DALY rates, with high body-mass index being the fastest-growing risk factor.

Pharmaceutical care program for ischemic stroke patients: a randomized controlled trial

Jianxin Wang et al.

Summary: The pharmaceutical care program significantly improved medication adherence and risk factor control for ischemic stroke patients, leading to better secondary prevention of stroke recurrence. More patients in the intervention group achieved target levels for blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipid profile, resulting in fewer hospital readmissions compared to the control group.

The Effects of Patients' and Caregivers' Characteristics on the Burden of Families Caring for Stroke Survivors

Anna Kavga et al.

Summary: The study found that both the characteristics of patients and caregivers were related to the perception of caregiving burden. Factors such as the patient's educational level, number of family members living in the same house, existence of equipment and facilities in the house, and duration of provided care were associated with greater burden perception. Caregivers in good health had a significantly lower perceived burden.
