Effectiveness of a Multicomponent Training Program on Physical Performance and Muscle Quality in Older Adults: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Noe Labata-Lezaun et al.

Summary: Aging leads to a decrease in functional capacity, including strength, physical performance, and muscle quality. Multicomponent training (MCT) combining different types of training may counteract these changes. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an MCT program on physical performance and muscle quality in healthy older adults. The results showed improvement in functional tests, but no significant changes in muscle quality parameters, except for vastus lateralis stiffness.

Sarcopenia parameters in active older adults - an eight-year longitudinal study

Kaja Teraz et al.

Summary: In this study, changes in sarcopenia parameters were evaluated in a population of active older adults after eight years. The results showed that 7 participants exhibited signs of sarcopenia, with declines in muscle strength, muscle mass index, and physical performance. Self-reported physical activity and sedentary behavior also decreased. Despite age-related decline, participants performed better on motor tests compared to similar studies. The prevalence of sarcopenia was consistent with existing literature.

The use of tensiomyography in older adults: a systematic review

Katarina Pus et al.

Summary: Aging of skeletal muscles negatively affects muscle mass, strength, and function in older adults, leading to reduced mobility, increased risk of falls, disability, and loss of independence. Tensiomyography has been used to assess neuromuscular function in asymptomatic and diseased older adults, providing valuable insights into muscle quality changes in aging and diseased populations.

Age-related differences of vastus lateralis muscle morphology, contractile properties, upper body grip strength and lower extremity functional capability in healthy adults aged 18 to 70 years

Isobel Jacob et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate age-related differences in muscle morphology, function, and functional capability in healthy adults. The results showed negative correlations between age and muscle thickness, pennation angle, fascicle length, maximal displacement, grip strength, and the 1-min chair rise test, while positive correlations were observed between age and the echo intensity of the muscle and total contraction time. The differences in muscle health were noticeable at 50 years of age, and females had larger differences compared to males. Physical activity was suggested to mitigate the detrimental changes.

Handgrip strength and health outcomes: Umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies

Pinar Soysal et al.

Summary: The study assessed the credibility and strength of evidence from systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies on handgrip strength and health outcomes. Overall, handgrip strength was found to be a useful indicator for general health status, early all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, as well as disability, requiring further research on mechanisms linking handgrip strength scores to these health outcomes.

Effects of a Massage Protocol in Tensiomyographic and Myotonometric Proprieties

Albert Perez-Bellmunt et al.

Summary: The study found that pre-competition massage can significantly increase the contraction time and maximal displacement of the gastrocnemius muscle, while reducing stiffness and tone. More high-quality studies are needed to draw clear conclusions about the effects of pre-competition massage.

Non-Invasive Biomarkers of Musculoskeletal Health with High Discriminant Ability for Age and Gender

Sandra Agyapong-Badu et al.

Summary: This study utilized a novel approach to assess ageing by combining routine physical function tests with muscle mechanical properties and thigh composition. A high accuracy model was established with five features measuring the effects of age on physical function, showing high sensitivity and specificity, which could be useful for screening and monitoring musculoskeletal health in older individuals.

Sarcopenia measurement in research and clinical practice

Elsa Dent et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a disease associated with accelerated loss of skeletal muscle and decline in functional capacity, primarily managed and prevented through exercise prescription and nutritional strategies. Various diagnostic and case-finding tools like EWGSOP, AWGS, FNIH, and SDOC are used to assess age-related sarcopenia, focusing on criteria such as muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical functioning/performance.

Assessing the Effects of Aging on Muscle Stiffness Using Shear Wave Elastography and Myotonometer

Yerim Do et al.

Summary: The study found that muscle stiffness in older adults was significantly lower than in young adults at rest and during contraction, with both MyotonPRO and SWE being effective tools for assessing muscle function loss associated with aging. Stiffness measures are important for exercise professionals to gain an in-depth understanding of muscle tissue-level damage.
