Anatomy of ultrafast quantitative magnetoacoustics in freestanding nickel thin films

Antonia Ghita et al.

Summary: We revisited the quantitative analysis of an ultrafast magnetoacoustic experiment in a freestanding nickel thin film. By applying our recently proposed approach of magnetic and acoustic eigenmode decomposition, we were able to determine the amplitudes and lifetimes of acoustic phonon resonances with high accuracy. The experimentally measured magnetization dynamics were in good agreement with numerical solutions of magnetoelastically driven magnon harmonic oscillators, and our modeling approach allowed for the discrimination of spatially uniform and nonuniform modes.

The Modern Problems of Ultrafast Magnetoacoustics (Review)

V. S. Vlasov et al.

Summary: This review presents the latest developments in the field of ultrafast magnetoacoustics, including the interaction between ultrashort acoustic pulses and the magnetic subsystem of magnetic films and particles, as well as the interaction between surface acoustic waves excited by femtosecond laser pulses and magnetic nanostructures. It discusses the unclear conditions of the interaction between surface acoustic waves and nonuniform magnetization modes in planar nanostructures, as well as the poorly studied effects of interaction between surface acoustic waves and metasurfaces. Furthermore, it explores the promising method of using the transient grating technique for excitation and detection of surface magnetoelastic waves in metal films and planar nanostructures, and analyzes the models of magnetoelastic nonlinear dynamics developed by researchers worldwide in the past decade.

A perspective on nonlinearities in coherent magnetization dynamics

Jingwen Li et al.

Summary: The recent development in ultrafast magnetization dynamics aims to extend spintronic functionalities to terahertz frequencies and achieve deterministic manipulation of magnetization. To achieve this goal, it is crucial to explore the nonlinearities in magnetization dynamics and understand the intricate couplings between spins, phonons, and electrons.

Resonant phonon-magnon interactions in freestanding metal-ferromagnet multilayer structures

Urban Vernik et al.

Summary: We analyze resonant magnetoelastic interactions between standing perpendicular spin wave modes and longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in metal-ferromagnet bilayer and trilayer structures. By controlling the frequencies and eigenmodes of acoustic vibrations, we achieve and tune the spectral and spatial mode overlap between phonons and magnons, resulting in strong resonant interaction.

Theory of inertial spin dynamics in anisotropic ferromagnets

Mikhail Cherkasskii et al.

Summary: Recent experimental observation of inertial spin dynamics prompts a holistic reevaluation of the theoretical framework of magnetic resonance in ferromagnets. In this study, we derive the secular equation of an inertial spin system using the ubiquitous Smit-Beljers formalism. Our findings show that the frequency of precessional ferromagnetic resonances decreases compared to the noninertial case, while the frequency of nutational resonances generally increases due to magnetic anisotropy and applied magnetic field.

Anatomy of inertial magnons in ferromagnetic nanostructures

Alexey M. Lomonosov et al.

Summary: The dispersion relations of magnons in ferromagnetic nanostructures with uniaxial anisotropy were analyzed, taking into account inertial effects. The study found that the magnon eigenfrequencies, eigenvectors, and Q-factors depend on the shape anisotropy in realistic experimental geometries. Discussions on the possibility of phase-matched magnetoelastic excitation of nutation magnons were also conducted, with conditions found to depend on beta, exchange stiffness D, and the acoustic velocity.
