Efficacy of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of port wine stains: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ling Wang et al.

Summary: The present study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for port wine stains (PWS). The findings suggest that PDT is a safe and effective treatment for PWS, but more high-quality comparative studies are needed to strengthen this conclusion.

Pathogenesis of Port-Wine Stains: Directions for Future Therapies

Lian Liu et al.

Summary: Port-wine stains (PWSs) are congenital vascular malformations involving skin and mucosa. The mechanisms behind their development and progression are still unclear. Possible causes include genetic mutations, decreased nerve elements, and cellular expression defects. While pulsed-dye laser (PDL) remains the gold standard treatment, recurrence rates are high. Topical drugs and photothermal therapy show promise in reducing recurrence and improving treatment outcomes.
