An adaptive uncertainty-guided sampling method for geospatial prediction and its application in digital soil mapping

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an adaptive uncertainty-guided stepwise sampling method for selecting sampling locations to improve the representation of existing sample points. The method uses an objective function with two weighted sub-objectives to guide the selection of supplemental samples, reducing areas with high prediction uncertainty and minimizing overall prediction uncertainty. A case study on soil property prediction shows that the proposed method outperforms traditional stratified random sampling and non-adaptive uncertainty guided sampling methods in terms of RMSE and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient with different sample sizes.

Random Forest Modeling of Soil Properties in Saline Semi-Arid Areas

Azamat Suleymanov et al.

Summary: The problem of salinization/spreading of saline soils is becoming more urgent, especially in the context of climate change. This study applied a machine learning method with environmental variables to predict the spatial distribution of soil properties in a semi-arid area. The results showed that remote sensing data plays an important role in assessing saline soils and their properties.

Soil mapping for precision agriculture using support vector machines combined with inverse distance weighting

Gustavo Willam Pereira et al.

Summary: Kriging is the optimal interpolator for precision agriculture, but it requires a high number of sampling points for accurate map generation. Machine learning techniques have shown potential in generating maps with fewer sampling points. In this study, a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm was implemented and compared to IDW and Ordinary Kriging (OK). Results showed that OK outperformed IDW and the ML method when Moran's I values were significant and higher than 0.67. However, the ML method performed better than IDW and OK in situations with low density of points and low degrees of spatial autocorrelation.

Digital mapping of GlobalSoilMap soil properties at a broad scale: A review

Songchao Chen et al.

Summary: Digital soil mapping (DSM) is increasingly used to deliver soil information efficiently. Research shows that while the number of DSM publications continues to grow exponentially, the majority focus on applications rather than methodology, with a particular emphasis on the mandatory soil properties for global soil mapping.

Understanding the Dynamic Mechanism of Urban Land Use and Population Distribution Evolution from a Microscopic Perspective

Min Jin et al.

Summary: With the advancement of urbanization, the contradiction in the man-land relationship becomes more and more difficult to ignore. This study explains the mechanism of urban changes by combining the expansion phenomena of urban land use and population distribution with the heat equation and identifying the diffusion coefficient. The results of the experiment show that applying the model to population data significantly improves its generalization ability.

Temporal and Spatial Changes and Driving Forces of Soil Properties in Subtropical Mountainous Areas from 2017 to 2020: A Case Study of Baokang County, Hubei Province, China

Tao Xu et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanism of regional soil chemical property changes is crucial for guiding precise farming and further alleviating poverty in mountainous areas. This study analyzed soil samples from Baokang County in central China and found temporal and spatial changes in soil chemical properties. The results also showed the effects of human activities, soil, and topographic factors on these changes.

Use of Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to Reveal Spatially Varying Relationships between Cd Accumulation and Soil Properties at Field Scale

Zhifan Chen et al.

Summary: The spatial variation of correlation between Cd accumulation and its impact factors in farmland was analyzed using GIS technique and geographically weighted regression (GWR) models. The study found significant negative correlation between soil pH and T-Cd, A-Cd, and a novel finding of positive correlation between OM and T-Cd, A-Cd. GWR was an effective tool to reveal spatially varying relationships and provided a new idea for precise farmland management.

Geographical detector-based stratified regression kriging strategy for mapping soil organic carbon with high spatial heterogeneity

Yaolin Liu et al.

Summary: Spatial variability of soil organic carbon (SOC) content is crucial for precision fertilization and climate change prediction. A geographical detector-based stratified regression kriging (GD-SRK) strategy is proposed in this study to effectively guide stratification, map SOC with high spatial heterogeneity, and achieve the highest prediction accuracy and R-2 compared to other methods.

Spatial Distribution of Soil Nutrients in Farmland in a Hilly Region of the Pearl River Delta in China Based on Geostatistics and the Inverse Distance Weighting Method

Rumi Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution of plant nutrients in soil in a hilly region of the Pearl River Delta in China. The results showed different distribution trends of various nutrients in the soil, providing support for the delimitation of basic farmland protection areas, the formulation of land use spatial planning, and the formulation of accurate farmland protection policies.

Estimation of Phosphorus Transport Influenced by Climate Change in a Rice Paddy Catchment Using SWAT

Kunyang Wang et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for crop production, but human activities have led to environmental pollution from phosphorus resources. Using a hydrological model to simulate phosphorus transport can help understand loss processes at catchment scale. Previous studies often struggle to accurately simulate peak phosphorus transport and fail to consider specific forms of phosphorus in transport processes.
