Robust NIR quantitative model using MIC-SPA variable selection and GA-ELM

Yuhua Qin et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a feature selection method MIC-SPA and GA-ELM modeling method to improve the accuracy and robustness of the calibration model. MIC is used to extract the feature set with high correlation with the target variable, filtering non-informative variables and noise data in the spectrum. SPA is applied to eliminate redundant features, and the features with the minimum RMSECV are selected as the optimized feature set. The results show that the combination of MIC-SPA and GA-ELM methods can achieve accuracy and robustness in NIRS modeling.

Early Prediction of Dementia Using Feature Extraction Battery (FEB) and Optimized Support Vector Machine (SVM) for Classification

Ashir Javeed et al.

Summary: Dementia is a cognitive disorder that primarily affects older adults and currently has no cure or prevention. Machine learning scientists have developed techniques for early dementia prediction, but these methods have limitations in accuracy and bias. To address these issues, a new model (FEB-SVM) utilizing adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN), feature extraction battery (FEB), and optimized support vector machine (SVM) with radial basis function (rbf) was proposed. The FEB-SVM model achieved a significant improvement in accuracy compared to conventional SVM and outperformed state-of-the-art ML models for dementia prediction.

A cellular automata-based approach for spatio-temporal modeling of the city center as a complex system: The case of Kastamonu, Turkiye

Oznur Isinkaralar et al.

Summary: Cities, as the intersection of global interactions, require analytical modeling of space to understand their organizational structure. The cellular automata-Markov chain (CA-MC) modeling is widely used in predicting land use change in complex systems. This study examines the land use change in Kastamonu city center from 1985 to 2021, aiming to develop a quantitative model for measuring temporal complexity variation. The model's agreement was tested and found to be >0.9438 based on Kappa statistical values.

Early detection of freezing damage in oranges by online Vis/NIR transmission coupled with diameter correction method and deep 1D-CNN

Shijie Tian et al.

Summary: Realizing online detection of early freezing damage of citrus fruits is meaningful and profitable. By introducing a diameter correction method (DCM) and utilizing a one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN), the effect of fruit size on detection accuracy can be effectively eliminated, leading to improved identification of early freezing damage.

Preference and performance of peach fruit fly (Bactrocera Zonata) and Melon fruit fly (Bactrocera Cucurbitae) under laboratory conditions

Muhammad Saeed et al.

Summary: The Peach Fruit Fly (PFF) and the Melon Fruit Fly (MFF) are severe insect pests for fruits and vegetables. The study found that Sponge Gourd and Bitter Gourd were preferred hosts for these flies, while Banana and Orange were preferred fruits. The preference of intact and infested fruits and vegetables also varied for the two fly species.

Comparison of X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to detect pest-infested fruits: A pilot study

Taeyun Kim et al.

Summary: Non-destructive testing (NDT) technology is widely used for inspecting agricultural products, especially for detecting pest infestation. This pilot study investigated the feasibility of using X-ray CT and MRI to identify pests in fruits, and found that X-ray CT outperformed MRI in terms of pest detection and quarantine process.

Comparison of characterization and antioxidant activity of different citrus peel pectins

Na Liu et al.

Summary: The properties of citrus peel pectins (CPPs) obtained from different cultivars and growth regions were compared. The physicochemical features of CPPs were investigated, including molecular weight distribution, monosaccharide composition, thermal behaviors and flow behaviors. It was found that different cultivars and growing areas had significant effects on CPPs. Some CPPs exhibited superior antioxidant activity, while others showed excellent functional properties. The study also identified the factors that contributed to the thermal stability and viscosity of CPPs, as well as their antioxidant activity.

Early detection of fruit infested with Bactrocera tryoni

Flore Mas et al.

Summary: The study found that specific volatile organic compounds released by fruits when infected with QFF could serve as indicators of early infestation. Different volatile substances have different accuracies at different stages when specific fruits are infected, requiring a combination for better detection of QFF infestation.
