How the Green Architecture of the 2023-2027 Common Agricultural Policy could have been greener

Herve Guyomard et al.

Summary: A new Common Agricultural Policy has been implemented since January 2023, but it is unlikely to bring significant climate and environmental benefits. Our research suggests that the policy could have been more consistent and effective by utilizing conditionality, eco-schemes, and agri-environment and climate measures. We propose rewarding farmers for exceeding minimum requirements through eco-schemes for global public goods and focusing on local public goods through agri-environment and climate measures.

Preserving local biodiversity through crop diversification

Eric Strobl

Summary: In the case study of birds and food crops, diversifying crop production is found to enhance local biodiversity without compromising revenue, based on annual bird survey data, high resolution land use data, and phylogenetic trees covering the United States over a decade.

Grain Yield Stability of Cereal-Legume Intercrops Is Greater Than Sole Crops in More Productive Conditions

Martin Weih et al.

Summary: The study in seven experimental fields across Europe showed that intercropping of multiple crop species can increase average yield, but the stability of intercrop yield is not necessarily higher than sole crop yield at most locations, except one. Yield stability significantly increases with increasing mean yields, which should be considered in designing intercropping systems.

Positive but variable effects of crop diversification on biodiversity and ecosystem services

Damien Beillouin et al.

Summary: Crop diversification in agroecosystems has positive effects on crop production, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, with different strategies showing varying impacts on specific ecosystem services. Agroforestry is particularly effective in delivering multiple ecosystem services, while variety mixtures provide the lowest benefits.
