Scaling-Up of the Production of Biochar from Olive Tree Pruning for Agricultural Use: Evaluation of Biochar Characteristics and Phytotoxicity

Andrea Crespo-Barreiro et al.

Summary: This study scaled up the production of biochar from olive tree pruning using three reactors to determine the production parameters that affect its characteristics and potential toxicity, and it was proved that it is possible to produce olive tree pruning biochar suitable for agriculture and environmental applications with large-scale equipment. The temperature and retention time are the most important factors that need to be controlled.

Biochar and compost amendments to a coarse-textured temperate agricultural soil lead to nutrient leaching

Veronika Jilkova et al.

Summary: Organic soil amendments, such as biochar and compost, have different effects on soil properties. In this study, it was found that both biochar and compost increased microbial activity and nutrient release in a coarse-textured temperate soil. When added in combination, biochar and compost had additive effects on all properties. Biochar addition also increased soil pH, microbial biomass, and the abundance of certain bacteria and fungi after 6 months of incubation.

Closing the circle for urban food waste anaerobic digestion: The use of digestate and biochar on plant growth in potting soil

Bede S. Mickan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of digestate as a nutrient source and its interactions with biochar when applied to potting mix targeted for localised urban use. The results showed that plant biomass and shoot N concentration increased with digestate addition in a typical nutrient dose-response curve. The application of biochar decreased soil mineral N content and altered the structure of the rhizosphere bacterial community. These findings contribute to optimizing the process of converting urban waste into organic fertilizers, promoting environmental protection and plant growth.

Biochar and Sulphur Enriched Digestate: Utilization of Agriculture Associated Waste Products for Improved Soil Carbon and Nitrogen Content, Microbial Activity, and Plant Growth

Tereza Hammerschmiedt et al.

Summary: This study found that the use of biochar-enriched digestate significantly increased soil microbial biomass, soil C:N ratio, fresh above ground biomass, and root biomass. Elemental sulphur-enriched digestate resulted in the highest arylsulfatase and phosphatase, increased urease, microbial biomass in soil, and root biomass. The amendment of digestate + biochar + sulphur led to the significantly highest total soil carbon, microbial biomass, fi-glucosidase, urease, and increased C:N ratio, arylsulfatase in soil, and root biomass, mitigating the adverse effect of either biochar or elemental sulphur on soil respiration. Properties of digestates were apparently affected by pre-incubation, and this approach in digestate fertilizer production may contribute to sustainable farming.

Di Liu et al.

Summary: The addition of biochar and compost significantly improved soil quality and nutrient availability under saline irrigation, leading to enhanced growth and yield of roselle plants. Mixing biochar and compost showed superior results compared to individual application of each amendment, suggesting the recommendation of their combined use for roselle plants irrigated with saline water.

Effects of biochar amendment on tomato rhizosphere bacterial communities and their utilization of plant-derived carbon in a calcareous soil

Hongkai Liao et al.

Summary: Biochar amendment had limited impacts on tomato rhizosphere bacterial community composition and their utilization of plant-derived carbon in alkaline calcareous soils. The relative abundance of C-13-labeled bacteria only accounted for approximately 2% of the total rhizosphere bacterial communities for both treatments. The bacterial taxonomic composition of the C-13-labeled ASVs was similar between control and biochar treatments.
