The Responses of C, N, P and Stoichiometric Ratios to Biochar and Vermicompost Additions Differ from Alfalfa and a Mine Soil

Biochar amendment reduces biological nitrogen fixation and nitrogen use efficiency in cadmium-contaminated paddy fields

Summary: Cadmium contamination is a threat to human health and limits biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in paddy fields. Biochar amendment can inactivate Cd, but its effects on BNF and grain nitrogen (N) use efficiency in paddies are uncertain. We investigated the effects of biochar on diazotrophic bacterial communities in Cd-contaminated paddy fields and found that it increased the abundance of diazotrophic bacteria in certain rice growth stages. Changes in the soil carbon/nitrogen ratio and the limited available nutrients in biochar were found to be driving factors affecting diazotrophic microbial communities. Biochar amendment also increased BNF efficiency, but decreased it during certain growth stages and reduced grain N use efficiency.

Planting Systems Affect Soil Microbial Communities and Enzymes Activities Differentially under Drought and Phosphorus Addition

Summary: The effects of different planting systems on soil microbial properties under drought conditions were investigated. Drought increased nitrate nitrogen, urease activity, and microbial biomass carbon in monocultures, but decreased them in mixed cultures. Addition of phosphorus in P. zhennan monoculture increased enzyme activities, dissolved organic nitrogen and carbon, and the abundance of total bacteria, G(+) bacteria, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Mixing effects on total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), bacterial PLFA, and fungi PLFA were synergistic in all treatments except drought with P addition.

Migration and Transformation of Multiple Heavy Metals in the Soil-Plant System of E-Waste Dismantling Site

Summary: E-waste generation is a major environmental issue worldwide. This study investigated the migration and transformation of different multi-metal fractions in the soil-plant system of e-waste dismantling sites. The results showed that biochar combined with plants reduced the migration ability of heavy metals in the soil. Additionally, different bacteria and fungi were found to be significantly correlated with heavy metal migration and transformation.

Effect of physicochemical properties of biochar from different feedstock on remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil in mining area

Summary: This study compares the physicochemical properties of biochar from different feedstocks and analyzes their remediation effects on heavy metal contaminated soil. The results show that biochar can significantly reduce leaching concentration of heavy metals, and the remediation effect improves with increased dosage and incubation time. Different types of biochar have different characteristics, suitable for different remediation mechanisms.

Summary: Mining restoration is crucial for ecological sustainable development, particularly in arid northwest China where the ecological stoichiometry and homeostasis in the plant-litter-soil system play vital roles in guiding vegetation restoration practices. Different re-vegetation types show marked variations in the plant-soil system stoichiometry, with nitrogen-fixing plants potentially mitigating nitrogen limitation. Factors such as easily-extractable glomalin, hyphal density, and available phosphorus are key in shifting the ecological stoichiometry in the mining subsidence areas.

Plant biomass allocation and driving factors of grassland revegetation in a Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau chronosequence

Summary: In this study, a chronosequence of alpine grasslands undergoing restoration in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau was used to test two competing hypotheses for biomass allocation. Dam inundation simplifies the plant community composition
